What if the music industry as we know it collapsed?
I came up with this question as I was listening to one of the most recent LEOG episodes and they were discussing the current recording industry being in its death throes. If the recording industry as we know it does in fact collapse, what do you think the future of music will be like? Would this be a change for the better or for the worse, and which genres do you think will be most effected? I'm looking forward to good discussion on this!

with more and more artists forsaking the the establishment in favour of releasing albums on their own, i think it would be a good thing if the industry collapsed. most artists at the moment don't own the rights to their own blood, sweat and tears which means the fucking wankers from the labels can do appauling things like this
and other such horrors, adverts (commercials) are fucking evil, cunts trying to sell you shite you don't neccesseraly need every 8 minutes during some tv programs and more and more i want to fuck the telly out the window cos they have been raping my musical tastes more and more to fucking do it! if the whole thing went tit's up i would say the only ones who would suffer are the hideous manufactured corporate puppets that most of us intelligent folks fucking hate anyway. the technological advances of late means that anyone with a scrap of real talent and ambition can make music for themselves using computers and don't need to dole out fuck loads of money on studio time and then upload the finished article on to the internet and get exposure that way.

i will add more to this thread but right now i am getting wound up exposing my eyes and ears to the shite i used to make my point so i am off to clense my senses with some of this

EXACTLY! I can also say that as a member of an unsigned hardcore/metal band, it pains me to know that all the sheep out there listen to this cookie cutter shit that's pushed by record labels. The internet is slowly killing the record label and I love it. Bands need to get what they deserve for all of their hard work, not some assholes who don't give two shits about the music. I happen to think that underground musicians are all around better musicians that well known acts. There is more heart and soul put into their stuff and their appreciation for fans is that much greater.

when thrash surfaced in the mainstream arena back in the 80's after the bands doing the leg work themselves but building up a fan base through tape swapping adverts in magazines and gaining experience through gigging, the record labels found a genre (and i hate the fucking word) that was semi established so signed them up which is why we went from this
to this
once Metallica's black album was watered down for the masses the record companies pushed most thrash bands to go down the ballad route which more or less destroyed it. in saying that probably the greatest band of the time stayed true and never backed down which is why we thankfully still have this

A perfect example. I might also add that I remember a day when Metallica said they would never be mainstream and would never make a music video. I also remember that shortly after that the video for "One" came out. It was the beginning of the end from there.

not an insult no but it's the reason why i won't take anything you say seriously. and which point would you like me to elaborate? some of us have better things to do than spend loads of time on longwinded replies and attacks on who exactly?
Once you've taken some time to learn how things work in the recording industry, know the risks and the costs that go into producing a hit record, then you'll understand why record labels are so keen on selling their products. If you're ignorant, then I'm sure you can argue that they don't deserve your money and you'll be perfectly happy to enjoy their products without actually paying them for it.
where does anything i've ever said give you the notion that i am a music pirate? and that i give a fuck how things work in the music industry go stick your headphones in crank up tool and throw yourself somewhere that will hurt, maybe off a roof or in front of a train perhaps.

While I can agree that there are many indie artists who emulate well known artists, there are many more that do not. Look at what Artie posted prior to your post. He provided a perfect example of what record labels do. When virtually unknown, Metallica produced their best works, but once caught up in the record label shit storm, they were changed. Record labels want money. To make money they take a product and mold it to what they believe will make them the most money. If Metallica is too "heavy, thrashy or raw" they have to tone it down to be more radio friendly and to fit the "radio popular" genre of the time. Have you any idea how many current bands out there were put together by labels? Many of these guys never met before they were thrown together in a studio somewhere. Yes, there are some popular bands that are good, but I'll stick to my statement and say that there are many more underground bands that are better. I'll be glad when the politics of the record label industry collapse. After all, "true" music isn't created for profit.

Join a band for a couple of years and then we'll talk about your perspective of the industry that doesn't give a shit about you or your music. It's all about product to them. The only way you can really understand is if you actually live it through a musician's eyes. It's really that simple. I know you probably won't understand that and it's fine. We all have our own perspectives and experiences. I just believe that it's the musicians and fans who suffer in the end that's all.

i think you'd agree with me Slap that neither of us believe that all bands and artists signed to labels are shit and all artists and bands that release their stuff themselves are great,we only have a problem with the lack of control over their own intelectual property and the way the record indusry treats them. If memory serves when radiohead left EMI and were about to release In Rainbows via download, EMI released a greatest hits at the same time cashing in on the publicity surrounding what was going on and probably hoping some of the fucktards that inhabit this rock would put 2 and 2 together and get 5 by seeing it and thinking it was the new album.
The Stone Roses famously took their label Jive/zoomba to court, to get out of the fucking horrendous contract their manager had naively signed, and won, if i remember right one of the clauses was that the band didn't get paid on the first 30,000 records sold, which for any group who had never released anything before and only had a fanbase through the gigs they played between manchester and liverpool, sales might not have even been close to that amount.
how about The Funk Brothers only in the last year being finally recognised as the true sound of motown by the label and get compenstated accordingly after how many years of being sidelined as session musicians having recorded more number 1's than elvis or the beatles.
no doubt the future head of C.U.N.T records will have a different take on this and probably defend the the establishment but hopefully if we ignore the corporate twat he might leave us to it \../
