Right now, I'm reading The Rum Diary by Hunter S. Thompson. It's no Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, but still a good read. He hadn't fully developed his Gonzo approach when he wrote it, more Hemingway than Hunter.
How NOT to Write a Novel by Howard Mittelmark and Sandra Newman-- a very funny and informative guide to all the mistakes new authors make writing their stories that provides examples using actual exerpts from poorly-written books.
Cult of the Amateur by Andrew Keen-- provides a disturbing glimpse at how Web 2.0's user-friendly technology undermines traditional media and threatens our culture. Everyone should read this book.
