You should look into the School of Hard Knocks. It'll teach you everything you could ever want to know at your expense.

As a fellow alumni of the School of Hard Knocks I wholeheartedly agree with this endorsement.

Palps and I matriculated there at roughly the same time, he working towards a Masters in Bootynomics and myself earning a double PhD in both Boobology and Sextronomy.

Alumni of SUNY Fredonia. Fairly decent departments in art, communications, film etc. One professor who taught Experimental Film Art has really tough but incredibly rewarding classes. Perfect size campus (5000 student body). Incredible campus life with a club for almost every hobby and interest.

 

And lots of fucking partying.

And you may get a scholarship for that GPA but I'm not entirely sure.

I can name two NOT to go to: The Art Institutes and FullSail. I go to PCAD (Pennsylvania College of Art and Design), which is the only college that REALLY offers a Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts in Pennsylvania. FullSail is pretty much overpriced bullshit that's unorganized and not very useful, according to a student who transferred from there. As for the Art Institutes, they apparently accept anyone and don't provide a degree but just a certificate, and they too are unorganized and fail to provide proper education for its students. 

 

Best bet? Well I think it depends on where you live and which colleges in your area provide that, research it. If you're willing to travel however, SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) is one of the best art schools in the country.

I live near Augusta, Georgia and the colleges here are mixed.

 

The majority are Technical and Community colleges; like Augusta and Aiken Tech, Piedmont Tech and Virginia College. I'm currently enrolled at Aiken Tech and will graduate next semester with my A.A. However I'm a little surprised that I am, because this school has an infamously low graduation rate (less than 11%) and the financial aid department is notorious for sucking really bad.

 

There is also Augusta State University, which is pretty decent, but they have a relatively non-existent art program. They do have art programs and degrees, but not in what I want.

 

The only other university is Paine College and it's a historically black college (and is well known for being a terrible school. Almost all students end up dropping out or transferring to other schools).

 

So yeah, I'm very willing to travel and have actually considered SCAD (one of my friends is receiving a Film and Television degree there). I've heard mixed things about the Art Institutes and they were mostly negative. I once received a course pamphlet from Full Sail and was considering it until I saw the $30,000 per semester tuition.

I'm no expert, but what I glean from people I've heard talking in the business, art jobs seem to be more about connections and the strength of your portfolio than about what university you attended and what degrees you have.  Many people who do well after an art college do so because they were able to make connections during their education process.  I'd put some feelers out and try and network and find a job doing what you want before you sink yourself further into college loan debt.  I know too many people who owe almost $100K, work menial jobs, and are barely scraping by after getting their Bachelor's in art school.
