I'm not going to go and say that this movie is going to change anyone's mind if they didn't like the theatrical version, nor am I going to say that this is the greatest super hero film ever. I am simply going to state my opinion on the film and whether you agree with me or not is entirely up to you.
When I saw Watchmen the second time (because like most people I let my fanboyism get in the way and judged it based on what was there and what wasn't from the comic) I came away satisfied from the experience. I didn't love it like I thought I would but I did like it alot and felt that it was a solid effort by Zack Snyder to recreate what makes Watchmen such an amazing story to begin with. Granted this is not a perfect adaptation and there were flaws mostly due to the time constraints placed on the film. However I felt that I enjoyed it simply because I judged it as a film on its own, rather than comparing it to the comic.
Now the director's cut has come and I have to say that this is the version of the film that should have been released in theaters. IF anyone doesn't know, the director cut adds a bunch of new scenes making the movie now over three hours and I believe that these scenes not only help flesh out the main characters but it also does fix some of the pacing problems from the original. Both Rorschach and Silk Specter benefit from these added scenes as it definitely adds more depth to their character.
This cut also has some scenes that were from the comic book such as the two bernies, Rorschach finding his costume in a dumpster, and of course the infamous Hollis death scene. I have to say that this is one of the most well done scenes in the entire movie and I have to say if you don't feel something during the scene you are a heartless bastard.
There are still some minor complaints I have with this version and it's mostly that I really wished they added some scenes from the comic that I really thought would have been great in the movie.
So I guess the big question is, will it make people who disliked the theatrical version like the film now. And to be honest I can't entirely answer that question. Of course the mainstream audience will probably skip over this (especially since it's a much longer film) and Alan Moore apologists will hate this film regardless of how much the DC improves the film since they hate any movie adaptation of a Alan Moore film. However if you're in the middle, I'd say give it a shot.
