So many movies coming out of Hollywood are very predictable and ultimately short-sighted towards its audience. Rarely, I've been truly surprised by the outcome of a film. My two choices for the most unexpected film endings are similar in that they both "sneak up" on you and totally go against how you thought they were going to conclude. These two endings both seem to be building up to somewhat surprisingly optimistic conclusions but then turn it on its head. These movies are Taxi Driver and A Clockwork Orange.

So, what do you Spillios think is the most unexpected film ending(s)?

Yeah, I wish the movie could've stuck to it's somewhat supernatural theme.
I would have to say Identity how in the end it all is in his mind. I was not expecting that.
Yeah, I completely agree. When that movie first came out, before people started expecting crazy ass endings like that, Identity blew my mind.
May have to watch it again since this discussion. lol
i watched identity BECAUSE i heard it had a crazy twist, and i STILL was not expecting that. I thought that was perfectly executed. that movie doesn't have the praise it deserves. i knew the second twist from the beginning, (kind of obvious) but the whole in his head thing was just.....i dont see how anyone could've seen that coming. completely original writing and is one of my favorite - mystery/thriller/horror/suspense/scifi/crime films of all time. truly a landmark for any of those genres.

I remember I recently watched San Quentin (1936) with Humphrey Bogart dying in front of the prison and when he utters his last breath the film abruptly ends just like that and it elevated the film for me in a more positive light in the fact how daring it was to end it with a man dying in front of the camera.

Also How To Train Your Dragon was a shock when Hiccup loses a leg after the Dragon fight, did not see that coming and it made the film even more awesome for me for going in that direction.

This on How To Train Your Dragon. Also the ending of Catfish more or less surprised me.

the first saw film had a suprising ending

I think the ending is the only thing that makes people say "Yay, the Saw series is bad, but the first one was kinda good"

because apart from the ending, it's just your generic torture porn.

no, haha actually its not. thats what is cool about it. it wasn't hostel, or audition at all. it was a smart, original, groundbreaking horror film that stands as a classic. it was cool, and an edge of your seat movie until the end, a very good end at that. i think "Saw" is a very underrated horror film that stands as one of the best to come out, espeacially this decade. honestly, i think the whole premise, even if it has been done before (definitely not in this manner) is a great overall film.

Since I watch a shitload of movies, it's really hard to suprise me. I for example got that Bruce Willis was actually dead in the Sixth Sense really early and still find Inception, though a great entertaining movie, somewhat predictable.

But two movies that really had me go "say what now??" are definately "Wild Things" (this movie has so many plottwists, its almost nauseating) and Moon. I loved the ending of Moon...

Oh, and the ending of the Mortal Kombat TV Show was great.... Bad guy kills all the good guys... Yeehaw!

moon was really unpredictable
