My top 5 would be something like this.
5. Penny Dreadful - This was an amazing movie I caught on tv a while back. It's about a girl that has a fear of cars, and has a know-it-all therapist that thinks a roadtrip is what she needs. On the way they hit a hitchhiker and feeling guilty, they give them a ride. This was a mistake. The movie preys on your fear of claustrophobia, and is very psychological.
4. The Shining - Really creepy. Need I say more.
3. REC - I was alone when I first watched this. Alone and terrified. The realism was so well played, the acting was great, and the ending was sublime.
2. Blair Witch Project - This is only slightly better that REC, because the believability factor makes it so much scarier.
1. The Exorcist - Pure terror ensues. This is the only movie I had to stop and wait a day before I could finish. It was that bad.

Oh man, Audition creeped me out. I never thought The Shining was scary though, good movie, but not really scary...

Hey Israel, Yes, "Audition"! I about freaked when the sack started thrashing, and the END!
thanks for sharing.

The Thing would have been my number one. Also Silence of the Lambs should have been on this list. And how could you miss Cannibal Holocaust? I would have put Se7en on there as well not because its scary but its at least creepier than one third of your selection.

Hey Curry, thanks for sharing. * great to see a fellow Carpenter fan out there! *

I have * ashamed to say* Not seen "Cannibal Holocaust", hard time tracking it down, and REFUSE
to spend $20 on a DVD for a movie I might not like, nor want in my collection. *hope to see it, someday!*

ALL lists are Subjective, I should have paraphrased mine "Top 50 Scariest *imho* ", everyone's experiences with movies will be different from the next person * that's why I LOVE this site so we can share and discuss our passion for movies!*

What kinds of movies you were allowed to see? at what age? shape how we perceive movies, I saw "Alien" at age 15, "The Exorcist" at age 16, and "Dawn of the Dead" at age 18, and pretty much after that I became jaded to Horror films. That's why 1995's "Se7en" depressed me more than it Creeped me out. That's why I LOVE it when a movie comes along and can creep me out! I chose to add the last third of the list # 33-50 to include, movies that scared me when I was a kid. Of course "Se7en" is creepier than "Gargoyles"

...again thanks for sharing Curry.

Nice placement of Session 9. I love that film. That probably is the best Stephen King type story I will ever see on film.

Thanks for sharing, Waterwizard. By chance have you seen the deleted scenes for "Session 9"? *Creepy!*

Geeeez, Blair Witch?
After spending all but the last few minutes listening to some chick bitch out her male friends, by the time we got to the end I wanted to kick the crap outta the witch myself for not killing said girl earlier. And whoever put this giant turd out there. And then the guys who made the sequel. Then I'm moving on to the Ring people...
I gotta go with Exorcist in there somewhere because I used to be sent to bed when it showed on TV. Even upstairs I could hear the sounds of it all, and would sometimes hide at the top of the stairs to catch glimpses for some messed up reason.
Also, Return of the Living Dead 3's first zombie scene is a good scare. I watched that alone, and the creepiness of the emaciated corpse dood wriggling around would keep me looking off into the dark corners of the hallway in my house. If someone had shambled into the shadows of it, I think I would've shit my pants.
There's alot of good scary movies, but I'm too lazy to go through them all, or be able to rank them properly.

Hey, thanks for commenting Dennis. Like I said every list is Subjective. IF I had NOT included the last third of my list #33-50 to reflect films that scared me as a kid, I would have had room to add Tons of gore films.

Sorry to here "Blair Witch" & "Ring" were NOT your cup of tea, but discussion is good!
Sharing viewpoints is awesome! *that's what I LOVE about Spill *

I agree, even just Hearing "The Exorcist" is a MESSED up experience, perhaps worse?
* case in point recently "Pontypool" and "Paranormal Activity" (I've seen neither) rely heavily on AUDIO for their Chills!*
