Justified Julius posted a statusWell, past few months Bioware has said that they will be making a new Mass Effect game and that the game won't be featuring Shepard (I don't have the article on hand from me) as the main character; they even went as far as trying to get fan's suggestions and feedback not too long ago.
Even if you're still bitter and angry about the ending of Mass Effect 3 and how Bioware handled it, what do you wish they would do with the story of the next Mass Effect game? Besides having a satisfying and decently written conclusion, that's a given. What are your ideas?

Permalink Reply by Nick Kroboth (Herr Daimyo) on January 7, 2013 at 3:44am Prequel would have the effect of the endings as well. In that nobody would really CARE about anything that was happening or the characters because we know, inevitably, what happens to most of them (no doubt they'll use familiar faces) anyway.
Permalink Reply by Cooke on January 7, 2013 at 12:08pm Personally? I want a sequel. Casey Hudson and his team will need to pick a canon ending. I was dissapointed by the ending, but I wasn't raising hell like a lot of people were. Hudson and company are currently working on a new DLC that might further explain/change certain aspects of the ending. More changes to the ending will make a sequel easier to make. Bioware wants to create a character who's very different than Shepard. I have no idea who that character would be. Maybe someone like Malcom Reynolds? I would like to play a character like that.
I would prefer a sequel. They would need to pick a canon ending. If the endings are not going to change(I'm still an IT believer) than I would pick the ending that is the most popular among fans. The ending chosen by most seems to be Destroy. Set it 200+ years in the future. Show the effects of Shepard's influence (statue on Citadel, presence of other species on Council, changes to galactic society etc). I think Cooke's idea of a Malcom Reynolds type character would be great. Casting someone like Nathan Fillion for the male voice of the character would please a lot of angry fans. Fillion has worked with Bioware before. He voiced one of the antagonists in Jade Empire. Maybe casting another geek icon like Felicia Day for the female voice would interest fans. A cast of some major talent will force even the most jaded fan to pay attention. If Bioware and EA are smart, then casting veteran voice actors like Mark Hamill, Nolan North, John DiMaggio, Chris Hardwick, Dee Bradley Baker, Janet Varney, Tara Strong, Mae Whitman, Claudia Black and Jen Taylor would certainly attract attention. Returning voice actors like Steve Blum and Ali Hillis would be great too. I think the story should be smaller in scale than the previous games. Make it a more personal journey for the future Mass Effect protagonist and crew. Focus on establishing a family dynamic between the new protagonist and the crew. The conflict and enemy needs to be something fresh. Chris’ idea of exploring unmapped regions of the galaxy would be really cool. Bioware seems to be returning to large scale exploration with Dragon Age 3. The next Mass Effect game will probably do the same. I loved the Reapers and Cerberus, but the next generation needs to face a new threat. I want a villain that makes my skin crawl. Someone who makes Saren and the Illusive Man look tame. Maybe the new villain should purposefully target the player’s new crew and chosen love interest? I want the villain to give me a sense of dread and genuine fear. Targeting my crew and love interest would provide that. I’m looking forward to future ME3 DLC and the next Mass Effect game. Like I said, casting someone like Fillion or Day as the main character would certainly make me happy. Any thoughts my fellow Mass Effect fans?
Permalink Reply by Sanjuronord on January 8, 2013 at 3:03am I just hope that by getting away from a Shepard like character they mean they're getting away from the Earth military altogether. No more human space marines. I'd love to see a ship filled with a whole wide array of aliens. I want my Hanar Spectre, an Elcor tank who quotes Shakespeare, a Volus Biotic-God, etc, etc...

Permalink Reply by TheFreshEG on January 8, 2013 at 1:19pm RETCON!!!
RETCON!!!
RETCON!!!
EA did it before and they'll do it again. make it so that the galaxy won the war with the Reapers, but the crucible didn't kill off all of the Reapers because, in retrospect, a giant prothean space dildo attachment that shoots lazers to kill off all synthetics in the universe by blowing up a fucking tube doesn't make any sense. Make it so that the mass effect relays are still active and weren't blown up by the relays. Recton out the fucking kid. Reapers were great enemies because they were forces of nature that were only there to destroy organic life and to feed themselves, They are rogue A.I. that felt that they were superior and decided to take over the galaxy; and that's all the motivation they needed. make it so that there are some of the reapers left that are trying to take over some planets and types of people and you are able to fight them by riding in the mako (vehiclular combat like mass effect but with better steering), flying in a ship, or by climbing up one of its legs and blowing it up from the inside. Give the player the chance to explore every single ability from all three games; the player improvement in Mass Effect was a nice improvement with how proficient you were with each gun. Also they shouldn't use fucking DLC in order to max out the player like in mass effect 2 (which is total bullshit). More with the abilities, they should have medical clinics where a soldier or an engineer can go in order to receive biotic implants. With the tech tree powers there should be infinite improvement on how much power it does, how fast it reloads and possibly what effect it has(like freezing, burning a player, or malfunctioning an enemies weapon). I say infinite improvement because as a player you will be fighting hordes of Elcipse, Bloodpack, Blue Suns, Neo-Cerberus, turian armies, Krogan armies, Alliance(space ship battles), and reaper battles(you against multiple reapers). Weapon improvement should go back to mass effect 1 with the freeze, burn, acid attachments and the stability and power attachments. you can look for resources on planets that would be able to improve these attachments and also have the attachments in ME3 like the silencer and scope. There should be the same amount of weapons like in Mass Effect where there are thousands of weapons to find but have different stats to compare; There might be a specific kind of gun that i like (submachine gun ) that i want to keep and improve that one weapon. You are able to decide and choose the race(which should include prothean, yag, and hanar) of yourself and your crew members. In battle your are able to switch from yourself to one of the crew members and have as many abilities as you want equipped into battle. Story wise, FUK IT, there's a big ass universe to explore with different people to meet with different problems, other gangs and enemies to stop, and other mysteries in the galaxy to explore and solve. Kind of like in Mass Effect 2 where the enemies your fighting aren't really the reapers but there are a bunch of other stories that help build the lore of the universe. You yourself are able to join the alliance, Cerberus, blood pack, or whatever group and execute the missions they tell you. you can also create your own group with your own custom emblem and have to recruit multiple people and develop their individual skills, weapons, vehicles and ships(kind of like FFT). You can send of your men to fight for your or to provide back up for you (in a giant battle field, they are ally A.I. that will be by your side like your crew members in their own groups) in mission and have a map like in Battlefield 2 to tell them where to go; on that note since Mass Effect 4 is made with the frostbite 2 engine they could have destructible environments. You should also be able to import your character into horde mode; you should also be able to costomize your own horde mode match in single player so yourself and your crewmen can fight hordes of geth, soverign class reapers, cerberus, etc....and that's it
but they wont do that, that would mean EA would have to take time and effort to make all those ideas work, which would mean more money into developing and less into marketing. They're going to have the same damn game with ideas taken from COD or gears of war; a different button besides space that will let you roll or 5 kill streaks for an asari sex scene. on top of that DLC which will be cut from the game and sold later. Mass Effect 3 had one of the worst endings for a story making it one of the most disappointing games ever made. I'm expecting nothing from Mass Effect 4 and it will most likely be disappointing as well.
P.S. if i miss spelled a word or my wording is off..... too bad
Permalink Reply by Dialtribe on January 8, 2013 at 10:52pm I think an MMORPG should be the way to go. If they are concerned about canon, make it take place between the first and second games where there was a counterattack against the geth, and that could be the driving force of the game. Collectors would also be a factor as this is when they are starting to become active, along with Cerberus, mercenaries and pirates. Rachni could also be there, possibly the Breeder from the third game having just been created by the Collectors. If you saved the queen, it can be explained as the Breeder being terminated with the capture of the true queen. An insane Reaper left behind could be making husks on isolated worlds as well.
You should be able to select what race you play as, and there should be two factions: Citadel and Terminus. Citadel players could play as humans, asari, salarians, and turians, while Terminus would be krogan, batarians, quarians, and vorcha, though there can be flexibility, just that these are the "official" race factions.
The two factions can be having increased friction due to the growing militarization of the Citadel against the geth, which is spilling over into Terminus systems as that is where they originate. It doesn't have to be war, but border skirmishes that risk escalation. The Migrant Fleet fearing that the Citadel will destroy their homeworld ally with the batarians and krogans. The batarians resent what they feel is their territory being invaded again and begin to arm themselves. Krogans don't really need a reason beyond revenge. It is also a chance to flesh out the vorcha to make up for their depiction as savages and cannon fodder in a game series that preaches tolerance and diversity.
It also doesn't have to be solely a fighting game, though I can tolerate that. Allow players to play as scientists and explore, or merchants with ships. Space flight simulation is OK if it can be implemented right. I would love to play as a pirate and raid ships. Since the Terminus systems are small in relation to Citadel space, the game could be isolated to its border so that both are equal in terms of size, though visiting the Citadel and Omega as hubs would be allowed. Just use this whole thing as an opportunity to expand the universe.
Man, I put way more thought into this than I should have.
Permalink Reply by Zgamer on January 9, 2013 at 12:16pm I do not want an MMORPG, that's for sure. Why should I pay a subscription fee to play The Old Republic when I could be playing an actual KOTOR game for just one flat price? Same goes for Mass Effect.
However, there needs to be either a retcon or a set canon ending regardless. There is simply NO POSSIBLE WAY to make a sequel with what has happened in the ending. Because each "ending" has a distinct and separate path and consequences, there can not be a way to unify them into a new game that adjusts to their situations. How do you write out the Reapers from the Destroy ending path? How do you write out the synthesis stuff from the Control ending? It is just not possible.
So I will desperately cross my fingers that this new "epic" DLC could be that needed fix that we all want for the ending. I know they said they would do nothing else to change it, but can they really stick to that ending with how unpopular they have become over the year? Especially when they continue to shrink in the eyes of the hardcore fans like me that they built over so many years? I am sure all would be forgiven by the fans if they did.
Permalink Reply by Dialtribe on January 9, 2013 at 2:16pm I highly doubt they will make an MMORPG. I just want one because it would allow for the best exploration of the universe. It is also the best way that I could play as an alien character rather than a human. I have never played Mass Effect myself as I am a Wii man, but I like reading its wiki and following its story. I'll probably end up buying the port for the Wii U.
Ideally, I think they should make both an MMO and continue with single player games. Star Wars has had MMOs along with single player games, though I am not sure if Mass Effect is popular enough to justify the expense. I would play the MMO to explore the setting and a single player campaign for a compelling story. Maybe they can make a happy medium. Maybe make a game that focuses more on exploration and is more open world like Fallout or Elder Scrolls.
As for the ending thing, yeah there is no good way to retcon it and satisfy everyone. I think they have entrenched themselves to a degree and won't budge. My best guess is a prequel or interquel. A lot of the stuff I mentioned above could still be used. The new game you could play as a member of a SPECTRE task force dealing with the geth and Terminus systems after Mass Effect 1.
