Hey guys, Im trying to get a little more active on Spill cause this is just a sweet website so I figured Id put you guys onto a book I just finished.
The Strain by Chuck Hogan and Guillermo del Toro of all people. Its a book set in today, in NYC. In short, its a Vampire plague that is threatening the city and possibly the world. I will admit, I like vampires, so I may be partial. At the same time I dont really like Del Toro so I went into it with an open mind but unsure of what to expect.
A total knock out. A great, entertaining, threatening book that had me hooked after page one. The authors tell the story from multiple view points and every major character is either interesting or threatening.
I dont want to pull a Spoiler here but I have to go into some detail. A plane lands in NY and immediately goes dead. Totally dead. Not an ounce of electricity in the plane. Once inside, the CDC finds that everyone in the plane is dead, save for 4 people who have no idea what is happening. As for the dead, they certainly arent alive, but their bodies arent breaking down as expected. Couple that with a strange gigantic mystery hardwood box filled with soil which isnt on the plane's log of cargo and we have a mystery which I garuntee will have you hoping the sun rises fast.
Let me add I picked up the audio book (read by Ron Pearlman, I know, shocker) which only added to the tension in the book. He did an excellent job of providing legitimate emotions to certain parts and sheer malevolence in others.
Either way, go check this one out. If you have already, let me know how you like it!
