The Short Life and Happy Times of the Shmoo

I had never read any Li'l Abner before so this was my introduction to that strip. I enjoyed the book but I don't think I would like the strip if it had nothing to do with Shmoos and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions of comic books or graphic novels that have a similar feel to this. I don't know enough about comics to find myself something that is good and lighthearted so any suggestions would be great.
