But, then again,
I could have sworn that Jackon Rathbone's comment would have stopped production...
"I think it's one of those things where I pull my hair up, shave the sides, and I definitely need a tan," Rathbone told MTV.com, presumably just before his publicist sat him down for a chat about political correctness. "It's one of those things where, hopefully, the audience will suspend disbelief a little bit."
Washington Post replies,
"But the only thing some fans will suspend are their plans to see the movie when it opens in summer 2010"
Update:
Protesters from the New York Casting Call in February
reported that the casting director are casting around the race of the lead roles chosen,
so this is how the tribes will break down:
Water Tribe = White People
Fire Nation = Middle Eastern People
Earth Nation = "Asian" People
Air Nation = White People
Lab I need to apoloogize. In my brain fartey and even after mentioning Africa for some reason it slipped by me when I was name ing the 7 in my head. The funny part is I was asking people at work . keep in mind I work in hospital. even a few doctors and nurses did the same thing. A house keeper corrected us.
No need for apology. I got where you were coming from in the end (as far as what we think of when someone says "Asian"). And I just wrote that San Andreas thing to stir you up. No hard feelings, mate.
I get the Technicality of indians are asian. BUT. When I look at ang i never saw "asian" . Maybe I'm not explaining it right. People don't look at Kal Penn and think Asia.
I'm also really tired of hyphenated - americans. I'm not african american. I was born in Pittsburgh. If you are born here you're American period. I never heard the term african canadian. They're just Canadian.
MDS's main point is the movie will fail due to the poor history of adaptations. rokrok's complaint is the feeling of lack of representation. The representation argument was lost when the hypnenated race came into play. The Avatar is heavily influenced by that part of the world and there really is no reason to cast the way they did. Sould they try to stick to the source? Sure. Remember though, they don't owe you anything at all. They own it now and can make it as they see fit. You don't like it. Don't pay for it. If it is done right people really won't care. Will it be done right? What do you think?
Probably not. There's a difference between Transformers(a dumb action show) being adapted and Avatar(a show with an in-depth plot and mythology) being adapted. It's hard to do it right, and I doubt M. Night Shamalayamanwhatever can do it.
And that's Kal Penn's official title, I didn't add the "-American" part to it, it's the politically correct term used for his position.
Remember though, they don't owe you anything at all.
Amen to that. I’m still wondering why, if this Avatar movie is supposed to be a representation of Asian culture and philosophies, why didn’t Asians come up with the idea in the first place or at least come up with something comparable to represent themselves and their background in today’s media? They didn’t do it and now some of those with Asian backgrounds are crying foul. I’m tired of hearing it.
I don't know anyone crying foul at the creators of the show.
Mike and Bryan are very talented artists.
It doesn't matter who created the show,
they could be black, white, brown, green or purple,
as long as its done right.
and Mike and Bryan did it right.
They did their homework.
The blood and sweat shows in their research and development.
They were inspired because they practice Kung-Fu and Yoga.
One of them moved to Korea for 4 months to personally work with the animators of the show.
Its too bad the producers working on the film didn't put in the same effort.
I feel sorry for the creators, though.
I am sure the Avatar franchise is their baby.
And now that they don't have creative control,
their baby is now in the hands of Hollywood.
If they supported the current cast they would be at the conventions marketing this film like they did with the show.
But, since their paychecks are on the line,
I am sure the contracts they signed instructed them to keep their mouths shut.
"One of them moved to Korea for 4 months to personally work with the animators"
Doesn't it make you wonder why it took some White dude who parcticed yoga to come up with this Asiocentric tale.
Why was it OK for them to tell the story with a mix of voice actors and not OK for someone else to tell the story with a racial mix of actors?
I caught the midnight screening of this movie but I had to do a 'censored version ' to the review I had already done to this movie. I'll try to get my 'UnCensored' Review up and running soon sincee I am having computer problems at the moment. For ...
Okay folks, this might have been touched on before on this site, but I must ask what your opinion is.
At the beginning of the movie when Kane dies, he, of course, whispers "Rosebud." and dies. Then a nurse comes rushing in. So, the question is: H...
