But, then again,
I could have sworn that Jackon Rathbone's comment would have stopped production...
"I think it's one of those things where I pull my hair up, shave the sides, and I definitely need a tan," Rathbone told MTV.com, presumably just before his publicist sat him down for a chat about political correctness. "It's one of those things where, hopefully, the audience will suspend disbelief a little bit."
Washington Post replies,
"But the only thing some fans will suspend are their plans to see the movie when it opens in summer 2010"
Update:
Protesters from the New York Casting Call in February
reported that the casting director are casting around the race of the lead roles chosen,
so this is how the tribes will break down:
Water Tribe = White People
Fire Nation = Middle Eastern People
Earth Nation = "Asian" People
Air Nation = White People
Maybe if you took some time and did your homework, you wouldnt' have started this useless argument and try and convince me that the way I feel doesn't matter.
If you're Caucasian, it's "being angry about something", because every hero is essentially Caucasian. So it's trivial for you.
If you're a minority, like myself(African-American), it's insulting, because no reason is offered for why other races can't have their prominent cinematic heroes. This isn't the 1930s, this is supposely the new millennium, and we are getting the same old "there can only be White heroes" spiel.
You should re-phrase that to," Only hollywood heros can be white." Last I checked not to many white heros in cinema outside of Hollywood. If asians want Hollywood to change then force it with their dollars. Force it inside their communities with all asian production companies. How many actors from Robert Townsend and Spike Lee movies went mainstream after being featured in those movies? What is the ratio of asian actors in Hollywood? How many out of 1000 are there?
Black actors still play drug dealers and pimps but we also carry lead roles and strong supporting roles. None of the major studios owes it to any of us to risk their money on something that may not cross into the mainstream. That's the reason. It's not fair but noone said it's supposed to be.
I think voting with your wallet is only half of it. Ethnic movie makers have also got to get out there and pimp the hell out of their movies. Nobody is going to watch a movie if they don’t know about it. I think that while people are protesting the casting of this movie, they should also be promoting what’s good in Asian American cinema. Show people what they’re missing out on by overlooking one group of actors to take the safe option.
Except the problem is, I don't see this as taking the "safe option". IMO, taking the "safe option" would be changing the characters officially to Caucasian, i.e. essentially creating new characters.
This is something way more sinister and despicable, whitewashing these obviously Asian/Native American characters. Also, in this new millennium, we are very aware of other races out there...the time of the stock white characters should be over and done.
