This upcoming movie release will suck huge. Caucasian heroes + Middle Eastern Villains = Epic Fail.
Oh well...
I guess that gives us a year until the franchise dies.
This Washington Post article should have killed production.
As if the MANAA blog and the East West Player Letter was not enough.
But, then again,
I could have sworn that Jackon Rathbone's comment would have stopped production...
"I think it's one of those things where I pull my hair up, shave the sides, and I definitely need a tan," Rathbone told MTV.com, presumably just before his publicist sat him down for a chat about political correctness. "It's one of those things where, hopefully, the audience will suspend disbelief a little bit."

"But the only thing some fans will suspend are their plans to see the movie when it opens in summer 2010"

Protesters from the New York Casting Call in February
reported that the casting director are casting around the race of the lead roles chosen,
so this is how the tribes will break down:
Water Tribe = White People
Fire Nation = Middle Eastern People
Earth Nation = "Asian" People
Air Nation = White People

1) I can't fight that one. I never saw Rathbone in anything.
2) Not really. If he does take that information and use it, then he'll disappoint the Non-fans because it's something they aren't familiar with. And if he DOES use it, there's a chance he'll upset the fan-base for ADDING stuff that isn't "Officially recognized".

4) Maybe it is pandering to the American audiences, I don't know.
5) Right, but the USE of format that was used to tell that story is one that was basically an American-standard format.
6) In a way, no. It's true that Star Wars marketing had a HUGE effect on the prequels and the Clone Wars, I can't deny that. But when the ORIGINAL trilogy came out, there WAS NO marketing push behind the movie cashing in on it because no one really knew how it would do in the theaters. In the case of Avatar, there are people that are going to push out material JUST BECAUSE they know they will make money with the name alone. Look at Dragonball. It's got a name-push behind it, yet the movie is getting so many mixed reviews it's not likely to please the majority of people.
7) My like or dislike of Avatar has nothing to do with the failure of almost every other Live-action adaptation of an animated series or movie. The history is POOR for their success, and most often a sad attempt of just getting the money based on the name alone, without respecting the source material or the fans OF the source material to give us a REAL quality movie.

2)Shyamalan is co-writing the screenplay with one of the creators of the show.

Plus, both creators are executive producers on this project.
I don't think that shyamalan will add new stuff unless the creators think its okay. Now, remember he is going have to cut one whole season into 2.5 hrs. so some sacrifices have to be made too.
7)Its not going to be new material, and it is rehashing the seasons. But the fact people saw Lord of the Rings come alive on screen after they read the book, and/or there was already an animated version of Lord of the Rings by Ralph Bakshi... didn't make it any less successful.

Except the fact that the Lord of the Rings books were written DECADES prior to being made, not just 3 years ago. Each BOOK was treated separately, and even then REAL fans of the books hated the changes that happened.
The other point to remember is that there wasn't a MASSIVE marketing campaign of pushing the LOTR material onto the shelves until AFTER the movie was announced, and NOT pushed to producers and studios as "The market is hot, let's strike now before we loose the profits".

2) But, they do use it. Its used throughout all 3 seasons. The information mentioned was a design change before the pilot. It was information during the design process. The process of developing the character. The creator said that Katara's hairstyle is based on an authentic Inuit hairstyle.

You do realize there are over 14 million Asian-Americans and 3 million Native-Americans in AMERICA right?

The creators were inspired by Hayao Miyazaki
which means they were more influenced by "Japanese-standard format"
If they used the "American-standard format"
Then they would NOT have written the story as a trilogy.
They would have kept the story going with infinite seasons to capitalize on merchandising.
They would have kept milking the consumers.
But, instead they used the "anime-standard format" like Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo and Neon Genesis Evangelion. They developed the story with a conclusion, they created the characters to grow and develop.
It's like what Bill Watterson (calvin&hobbes) says about licensing,
"...I believe licensing usually cheapens the original creation. When cartoon characters appear on countless products, the public inevitably grows bored and irritated with them, and the appeal and value of the original work are diminished. Nothing dulls the edge of a new and clever cartoon like saturating the market with it..."

So we have a nation of people who look to be of middle-eastern decent attacking and enslaving all the white nations and bombing them and burning them???

The Earth Kingdom will be composed by mongolians and chinese.
And I think you people need to take a closer look at who are working behind the cameras. Producers Frank Marshall and Kathleen Kennedy are working with Shyamalan. The creators are there to supervize everything, the effects will be done by ILM and Andrew Lesnie is the cinematographer (he has worked in the Lord of the Rings trilogy and King Kong)
So the cast may suck (to you), but the technical aspects of the film will be top noch.
Also, I don't know if anyone cares, but Frank Marshall has confirmed via his Twitter that the first teaser trailer will be released in front of Transformers 2 on June 24th. I guess then we can all be fair judges.

They are doing the same thing that Paramount did with Transformers. Transformers was released July 2007, it's announcement trailer came out June 2006. So don't expect much in this teaser trailer.
