This upcoming movie release will suck huge. Caucasian heroes + Middle Eastern Villains = Epic Fail.
Oh well...
I guess that gives us a year until the franchise dies.
This Washington Post article should have killed production.
As if the MANAA blog and the East West Player Letter was not enough.
But, then again,
I could have sworn that Jackon Rathbone's comment would have stopped production...
"I think it's one of those things where I pull my hair up, shave the sides, and I definitely need a tan," Rathbone told MTV.com, presumably just before his publicist sat him down for a chat about political correctness. "It's one of those things where, hopefully, the audience will suspend disbelief a little bit."
Washington Post replies,
"But the only thing some fans will suspend are their plans to see the movie when it opens in summer 2010"

Protesters from the New York Casting Call in February
reported that the casting director are casting around the race of the lead roles chosen,
so this is how the tribes will break down:
Water Tribe = White People
Fire Nation = Middle Eastern People
Earth Nation = "Asian" People
Air Nation = White People

By the way... I don't give a shit who plays who... they don't have to look anything like the cartoon.
As long as they stay true as much as possible to the source within that 2.5 hrs mark. I'm happy.

Im glad that dev patel is part of the movie
but, now he is the token asian guy.
also, he is the villain.
If you remember the series at all
(spoiler warning)
Zuko doesn't become the hero until the 3rd season
and in the movie its going to look like
the white saviors changed the brown guy's evil ways.
I don't know if you read that Washington Post article
but, it doesn't sound like they are staying true to the source
especially with that crazy casting lady, DeeDee Rickets.

I'm thinking who really is going to care Whites... they are always heros.... Asian in their animation everyone pretty much looks white.
I think it depends on the direction of the movie if they want some type fantasty matrix type of deal it my be a white cast... but if the go for like a lord of the rings kinda gritty real oldworld look. i think the cast will be Asian descent. Anyway im intrested in see the Airbender.. please tell me Zuko will be played by his voice actor....please?

Well, the people who care are the ones offended by the white cast.
especially the parents, since the movie is targeting kids.
I guess I have to use Le Guin's quote again,

I guess this applies to animation as well. Do the characters not look asian because there skin color was not the right shade of yellow or were there eyes were not slanted enough?
Are there names, Aang and Zuko, and there style of clothing not enough to make the character asian?
Well, if they want to stay true to the source material
the direction it needs to go in
is a fantasy universe where white people don't exist.
And Zuko is being played by Dev Patel.
