Hey folks,

Now if anyone has paid attention to my rants well thought-out discussions about video games, you might have noticed that I am not the biggest fans of console systems or multiplayer shoot them ups, but I do actually enjoy them to a degree. I tend to treat them more like having a candy bar: a good treat but not worth missing a meal for.

But a few days ago, I came across an article that had pretty much every gamer I knew in arms about. Labelled "7 Gadgets that won't be around in 2020", it had few surprises...until the very end. Basically, it said that not only will console system be pretty much over by 2020, but that the market is already slipping. It stops short of saying that such system will be completely gone, but states that the market will be taken over by smart TVs, tablets and other devices to the point that having a stand-alone console will no longer make sense.

So here is the link to the article, and feel free to discuss the merits of it. Could the console finally be going the way of the 8-track, or is there hope for the future? If it is replaced, with what? What effect will this have on video gaming in general?

Approx 8yrs for tablets and Smart-TV's to replace game consoles? Nah, seriously doubt it. Not unless the technology on those formats are able to vastly improve controls, options, hard-drive for game space OR get the programmers for people like GTA and Fallout 3 (to name just 2) to start reworking their entire library of games to work on those platforms.

Now, the gaming console as we know it NOW being gone by 2030... maybe. I figure by that point we'll actually get technology with some kind of small (kind of hand-held) device that can project images of high enough quality on screens or spaces without projecting them on walls or TV screens.

On a personal note...I think consoles are on the way out, but they will be replaced with something versatility. The Wii, iPhone and iPad aps have proven that the casual gaming market is strong and profitable without the huge cost for traditional consoles and game systems. And who knows, maybe by 2020 an iPad will have as much power and ability as high-end gaming laptops.

Honestly I think they need to release a new generation to stay a float.  The only reason the market is slipping is because everyone who wants a X-Box 360, PS3, or Wii, already has one by now.  No new sales in other words.  Not only that I think video games are starting to hit their peak on what they can do with the graphic chips they have on consoles.

Not only that, but the article doesn't say that consoles will be gone.  They say they will integrate with T.V's so that you can buy your console and your T.V all in one spot.

No actually it's stronger than ever.  With releases like "Starcraft 2" the P.C gaming industry should keep going strong.
True, PC gaming now has an advantage over consoles thanks to DLC and simply better systems. I believe it was MDS that posted a picture of L.A. Noire recently from the PS3...and the quality was...meh. PCs can simply keep up with new systems and hardware better and faster than a console.
Pc gaming has supposedly been dying for the last decade. But it's not.
It actually doesn't, you can keep your computer at the same level of consoles ( 5 year old hardware ) and spend about the same and just turn down your settings, but with PC you have the option of updating your specs. You don't have the same variety with consoles. Also, you can do the same thing with PCs ( sitting on your couch and relaxing ) with an HDMI cable if you want. I find computer chairs way more comfortable though.

I would apologize, but I'm still grieving over the death of Soap. Why did Makarov have to be a deep cover agent all along? Oh well, at least you get to tactical nuke Russia and kill the president of France.

However, I don''t see what Gears of War 3 has to do with my previous comment.

The fact that you say computers take too much money to keep updating only implies how very little you know about PC gaming.

Relaxing on my couch playing Mass Effect 2 with a controller? Yes, I've done that, on my PC, with much better graphics than you could ever wish for.

Do yourself a favor and shut the fuck up.

So Mass Effect doesn't look like shit on the PC anymore?
And the PS3? It has the upgraded engine.
