The Avengers -- Too Joss, Too Buffy
So I've seen the Avengers twice now online (there's streaming copies around). It's good, but it's not that good.
When they get to bickering at each other they get way out of character, and suddenly it's like watching Buffy and her friends in one of their snappier episodes, where they all sit around and get catty. Joss Whedon has a unique and continuous style of dialogue and humor that permeates all of his work, much like Quentin Tarantino's scripts. It seems like each character is the same person, in their choice of words and smarmy but not-quite-rotten banter.
I liked the movie, but I swear Joss is one guy who could use a writing partner.

And I didn't think the movie felt a thing like Buffy. Not even a little. I actually haven't heard anyone make that comparison up to now.
I also think it's kinda hilarious that you think they "get out of character". What do you mean? It's Samuel L Jackson having a conversation with Robert Downey, Jr? It was nothing like that at any point. o.O

I meant that in both Joss Whedon's work and Tarantino's everyone speaks with the same voice. There is no distinction between characters in their manner of dialogue, just in their costumes and roles.
And yes, I think they get "out of character". See: Thor getting catty.

That would be a valid point if it weren't for the fact that Koval said absolutely nothing about the camerawork and instead criticized the dialogue and characters, which are not visual aspects of the film...

You wouldn't know of the audio quality in the copy Koval viewed. He saw the movie regardless of you disagreeing with his opinion. You have no monopoly on whether or not his views are valid. Suck it up.

This is some incredibly dumb reasoning. It's like saying that someone's opinion about a book is invalid because they read it on yellow paper instead of white paper.
You don't even know the quality of the bootleg he watched and you've already decided he saw some kind of subpar cam version.
You can't even address his criticism, so instead you're just making shit up in an obviously butt-hurt attempt to somehow invalidate his opinion.
You're just talking out your ass concerning a strawman.
Regardless of the sound quality, his criticism has to do with the dialogue, and it isn't about how he couldn't hear what they were saying, it's what they were saying to begin with.
His gripe has nothing to do with audio or video quality.
He saw a movie and didn't like part of it.
He didn't pay to see it.
Get the fuck over it.

I’m probably the odd man out but I’ve never watched Buffy. I just had a browse of Whedon’s writing credits and honestly haven’t seen much of his work outside of Firefly/Serenity. That being said, I didn't think the dialogue felt out of place. If anything, this was quite an effective translation from the static text block and word bubble style of comics to a live action medium. Especially considering that this is a superhero team-up story. Those books can get so bogged down with expository dialogue that I thought this was actually restrained and really did well to let the visuals carry their share of the storytelling load.
As to your comment regarding the bickering, I’m not sure if you’re writing about overall character interaction which I agree had a certain smarm about it, or one scene in particular where the team is discussing Loki’s motivations on the hellicarier. If it is the latter, I was under the impression that they were under the influence of Loki at that point, or at least his staff which was being analysed in the room they were in. Again, this was a toned down representation of the conflicts seen in comics which took little away from the story or my enjoyment of the film.
