is Cancelled. What are your thoughts? Damn good show? Shitty imitation? Meh?
By the way, a great article by Gateworld on SGU's demise.

Permalink Reply by Stephen Quentin Easton on December 18, 2010 at 3:12am It's more of an adult drama than SG1 or Atlantis series for sure, and I think that was part of it's problem. Fans of those want more heroic, lighter fare, and consequently many were turned off by the character conflicts presented here.
Unfortunately, it was also quite incredibly slow. It failed to generate the intrigue that series like Battlestar Galactica did when it was good, and there were many episodes that were just dull. I think that was partly down to the lack of an ongoing conflict with another species, it just never really grabbed me.
Permalink Reply by Havoc on December 18, 2010 at 3:24am You're right about the pacing. It had slow-burning stories sure, but at least they said something say about these people. It's sometime the curse of these character-driven serial dramas where they focus on nuanced character development over plot developments. That's not to say that you don't have a point, It felt slow to you and that's the fault to the production.

Permalink Reply by Gift of the Magi on December 19, 2010 at 8:54pm With all of it's flaws, I still felt SGU was a better show than SG-1 or Atlantis. The first two shows had all the originality and intellect of the standard A-Team episode: Loud, silly, flashy fun. SGU was an attempt to create a smarter, more hard sci-fi series than its predecessors. Sure it was slower paced and delt more with the characters than big bangs...and that was ok with me. Comparisons to BSG V2.0 are a bit unfair, as that series (while also somewhat character-driven) dealt with at least 50% action and dead-end 'mythic' storylines.
SGU was mostly 'hard' sci-fi without adding mystical crap to it, something we don't see much of anymore...and it was a welcome change. Maybe if it wasn't attached to the SG franchise, people may have given it more of a chance. Too bad.
Permalink Reply by Stephen Quentin Easton on December 20, 2010 at 8:20am I know what you mean about SG1 and Atlantis. Way too much running around woods shooting Jaffa cakes or whatever. Rather like ST:Voyager, occasionally there'd be a good episode. But it was very light sci-fi.
The BSG reboot was great for the first two and a half seasons, but then as you suggested the whole mystical thing became too much. It turned from sci-fi into fantasy.
SGU's strong points were the adult drama and hard sci-fi elements. Shame it bored me so much.
My absolute favourite sci-fi series of all time was Odyssey 5. Again adult, character driven hard sci-fi, but with more good ideas in it's one and only season than most other shows have in their entire run. Two things killed this off IMO, it was too cerebral for some people to like and the characters said 'fuck' far too often for many people's taste. One of my favourite exchanges:
Character #1: It's probably just a construct made to look human so as not to freak us out.
Character #2: How do you know that?
Character #1: 300 episodes of Star Trek.
Permalink Reply by MDS on December 19, 2010 at 9:40pm Wow, a show who's entire second season DIDN'T DO CRAP!!!! was canceled?
Honestly, I am not surprised at all. The entire second season (with the exception of maybe a total of 45min) was completely boring where NOTHING ADVANCED to the point of being entertaining.
Other than:
1) Getting rid of Lou Phillips
2) exposing the fact they could now control the ship
3) Killed fat-boy's girlfriend.......
What else happened the entire 2nd season that is worth talking about or even memorable.
Permalink Reply by GigaBOMB on December 21, 2010 at 1:11pm it was a sleeping pill, now if only they would cancel sanctuary, stop being human from coming out, fire whoever is running syfy and make it a proper science fiction channel again =D
