If it's crap... We'll tell you

Superman died and even that couldn't save him. He's washed up. Superman returns sucked like a Hoover. Every movie has Lex Luthor ( is that misspelled?) he doesn't do shit. Superman has all these powers but no one to use them on. He has no villain to just wail on for two comics then come back to do it again. Doomsday's OK but not that interesting.

The Christopher Reeves movies did well because no one made any other heroes we have mavel with spider-man, Iron Man, and The avengers. We all know DC has a mush better hero to look up to.

Batman sums it up best: "It is a remarkable dichotomy. In many ways, Clark is the most human of us all. Then...he shoots fire from the skies, and it is difficult not to think of him as a god. And how fortunate we all are that it does not occur to him."

If Batman can insinuate that Superman is a being more human than alien/god, then you know anyone can relate to a "frigging alien."

Yea, but that's from Batman's perspective. In that context, Batman has found someone who threatens his own agenda for control and order. This is why if you read JLA's Prometheus first appearance you find out Batman keeps tabs on how to defeat EVERY one of the JLA. He trusts no one.

The alien component comes all the way back to the fact, Superman was invented by two Jews who were starting @ that magical time in NYC where comic books were becoming popular during WWII. Sure, there's messiah complex mixed in there. The coming of "the one." A little religious significance. But it IS the mortal visage of Clark Kent where he wants to be one of us. He falls for Lois Lane, a city girl. And it's in the original slogan, "Truth, Justice, and the AMERICAN WAY..." where Superman's creators that came from other countries proclaim their love for a new home.

Hence, the idea of an immigrating alien from a world gone to shit, who feels compelled to stand for a higher principle.

yeah
an alien, but an lien with superpowers?
--
alls i'm saying is
can you read superman and not think that the only reason they don't have him destroy every villain is because he a "good guy"?
just about everybody says that 'if i were superman' i'd do this
then we say "why doesn't he?"
he's a good guy
why doesn't he just use his super hearing and capture every baddie

Because a hero never murders willingly. Only anti-heroes like The Punisher and Wolverine do so, because they are trained to kill. Batman, Spider-Man, and Superman are not trained killers, so they don't partake in those kinds of activities. If Superman were in the military, or a hired assassin, maybe he'd take out all the bad guys.

And another thing: why doesn't Wolverine or Punisher kill all the Marvel Villains? They don't have a problem killing, yet people like Dr. Doom, Norman Osborn and The Kingpin are running amok.

As for people who say, "I would do this if I were Superman," that's why you make your own damn superhero. Superman is who he is, and the people who have tried changing him always managed to screw him up. They even tried to make him more of an antihero, by giving him a huge ass gun. Guess what, the story sucked ass. You don't change something about a character for change's sake. You'll end up with a bad result.

So Superman is fine the way he is.

wolverine and punny don't kill all the villains because they aren't superheroes
--
no one can relate to perfect, so they gave supes a witless reporter and a rogues galllery that me laff more than tremble to make the comic more interesting
--
he just needs more weaknesses and to drop[ that whole,"he's a reporter so he can respond to the situation faster" i s lame by today's standards
batman doesn't work at a fucking newspaper to respond to shit, he uses his gadgets to help him
--
name one superman comic that'll change my mind about him
and i'll shet up when my mind is changed

I just told you they are, as anti-heroes, professionally trained killers, and therefore should have no problem wanting to kill all the bad guys. Your excuse for why they don't is the reason I gave you for why they should, and yet they don't. The Punisher of all people should be killing every last villain in his universe.

And besides kryptonite, there's red sunlight that zaps Superman completely of all his powers. He's helpless against magic. And probably the most obvious weakness is the fact that being married to Lois Lane exposes him and her to danger.

And you never seem to argue about Superman without revealing some unsubtle bias towards Batman, which by the way when you did so, you totally downplayed it at the same time. Batman doesn't just rely on his gadgets. He's a detective, and he even uses disguises (Matches Malone) to get close to the criminal underworld. Any fan of Batman should know that.

And responding to the situation as a reporter makes sense because Metropolis always has something happening, and The Daily Planet is first on the scene. And your argument about Clark being a reporter is moot considering Spider-Man's alter ego is a freelance photographer for The Daily Bugle, or that the Savage Dragon is a police officer. Playing it close to the pot gives heroes the best success rate when stopping crime or combating evil forces.

Why change that?

As far as naming comics, the people of this great site already named several of them.
All-Star Superman, Superman: Birthright, Superman For All Seasons, The latest Geoff Johns run in Action Comics, Kingdom Come. You didn't need me to name one when people have said these several times already.

punisher is working his way through his shit-list
and wolverine has no reason to kill ALL villains
--
sunlight, crystals and magic being supe's only weaknesses is LAME
--
i'm not biased toward batman, its just batman has better comics and such
though, i have to admit 'kingdom come' is awesome, but i wouldn't consider that a superman comic
--
as far as kent's job being a reporter--is a JIP
he can hear 'clouds scraping' why should he work at a newspaper?
he doesn't need to
statistically he should be busy all-damn-day: saving people around the world instead of bantering with lois lame
i mean lane
i don't see how anyone can be a fan of a comic hero so flawed
parker's got bills to pay
and bat's gotta have resources to fund his crime fighting
and i wasn't saying batman JUST relies on his gadgets, i was trying to convey that he doesn't have super strength or the ability to build a prison made so none of its occupants can escape, like superman
i already know of malone

Frank ought to kill the the last few people who portrayed him in those movies.
Woverine has plenty of reasons to kill villains. Just ask Sabretooth.

Oh wait, never mind. He's dead.(Not to villians: Never kill Wolverine's girlfriends...ever!)

--

If he had anymore weaknesses, Superman would be as human as Jimmy Olson. At least he's not afraid of fire.

(Sorry, Martian Manhunter)

But at least Superman's strengths and weaknesses aren't overwhelmingly incongruent. With one of his weakness, he becomes as human as the other heroes.

--

I won't argue that Batman has some of the best comics, but to their credit, Geoff Johns and Grant Morrison make Superman look good. On the other hand, Grant Morrison has that pesky habit of sometimes making Batman's comics look bad.

But that's just another argument completely.

--

I never put to much thought into why Clark Kent chose to be part-time reporter, part-time superhero, but my guess is he wants to represent two things viable to his being: the fact that he is Kryptonian and that he was raised by Ma and Pa Kent. It's been mentioned several times already that Superman wants to relate to humanity despite his alien heritage, and Superman himself is an allegory for immigrants who came to America looking for the opportunities that await them.

And what do you mean statistically he should be busy all-damn-day? What statistics? Are superheroes not allowed to have lives outside of heroism? That's probably why Clark Kent is a reporter. Sure he is a hero and has great responsibilities, but if I were the Man of Steel, there would be a deeper part of me that would want some sense of what it means to be normal. Outside of being a savior to the world. Thus being a news reporter, where one can be deep in the heart of it all.

And besides, you have members of the DCU that are plenty capable of picking up the slack were Supes unable to react to a major crisis. The Justice League of America can hold their own, even when Supes seems far away.

As for Lois Lane: PLEASE! I'd choose her over Lana Lang, anyday!

--

And how's this for irony? Bruce Wayne has the technology, the financial resources, and the other means to fund his crusade against crime, but he can't use some of that same money to make a donation to help raise funds for to make possibly the greatest maximum security prison ever assembled? No, he'd rather allow it so criminals go into Arkham Asylum, break out there off panel, and return in a following issue an even bigger nuisance than before? I mean don't get me wrong, I love Bats. But that's one flaw I have to bring up if you're going to tell me that "Supes can do this, but he doesn't do that" slippery slope argument.

At least Superman's universe has the Phantom Zone.

if supes is 'goody' enough to not throw villains into the sun
then he should be 'goody' enough to not take breaks with saving the people across the world

also
i see what yer saying with the whole batman building a good enough prison-thing
i never thawt about it like that

but
i still stand by my opinion, i still think supes sucks
About this whole Superman needs to be active all of the time (when he practically is): again, I've said previously Superman has help. And he needs them because Superman has to fight off bigger threats that have much more collateral damage.

Take Final Crisis for instance: Superman had to go across space and time to save not just his own world, but the ENTIRE Multiverse! That's more lives than what he's entrusted to saving on any given day! I know he has to keep busy, but bigger threats rear their ugly heads and will continue to do so. But if Superman is off fighting somewhere where he's not truly needed, and he's needed back at home, then you're going to have humans enslaved by alien demigods who are too strong and too dangerous to stop.

--

You're entitled to your opinion, but I will stand by mine. I don't believe he needs changes to his appearance or personality. People who tried failed miserably. I think I'm fine with Superman the way he is, and how he should be.
Iron Man is the best.

How can we make superman more interesting any ideas? i myself was think making a change as perhapse thinking arrogantly and thinks of humanity as a lesser species/mad or if left to their own devices would become a threat to his plans.or a kryptonian noble brought low by the destuction of his homeworld. Maybe he would be a brutal survivalist trying to think of bringing krypton back to life some how using the earth as a template. These are just random ideas anyone else has any? I know people say that some superheros hold back their strengths but i dont really buy that. That always makes me think they are really tame or something crap like that. A superhero really needs to strive agast a great threat otherwise its just lame.
