Superman died and even that couldn't save him. He's washed up. Superman returns sucked like a Hoover. Every movie has Lex Luthor ( is that misspelled?) he doesn't do shit. Superman has all these powers but no one to use them on. He has no villain to just wail on for two comics then come back to do it again. Doomsday's OK but not that interesting.
The Christopher Reeves movies did well because no one made any other heroes we have mavel with spider-man, Iron Man, and The avengers. We all know DC has a mush better hero to look up to.

youre gonna get a lot of negative critism for a statement like that.
but
to be honest...i agree.

I disagree. Superman has plenty more villains than Lex (Brainiac,Bizzaro, and Darkseid to list a few), but Lex is his arch-enemy. This is mainly because Lex works so well as a villain because he is the complete opposite of Superman in every way possible.
Also, Superman does use his powers. IIRC, he died (for a bit) trying to stop Doomsday, so he used many many powers there. Then, in All Star-Superman Volume #12, Superman uses his powers to stop Luthor.
The movies are something else. Luthor was used in "Returns" because the best way to set ground with Superman is to start with his arch-enemy in order to show what he can do. In the original Donner films, Luthor was the villain in the first in order to set ground like I said, then once they were on the right path General Zod was the one of the main villains in part 2, and Luthor wasn't even IN part 3, so you are wrong there.
I don't know how you can say that is the only reason the Reeves/Donner films did well. If the first two came out today, they'd be just as popular as long as they were remastered.
Superman is my favorite superhero in the DC Universe, my all-time favorite being Cap.
Because Superman works on a mythic level most other heroes could only dream of.
Because of Donners Superman 1 and 2.
Because of Alan Moore's Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow? and For the Man who has Everything
Because Morrisons All Star Superman is one of the greatest comics ever made up there with Watchmen.
Because of Superman TAS

I didn't read any of those comics and your video is just a Metallica song I don't want to listen to right now. Could you explain what you mean by "a mythic level" and why that makes him not suck, please?

I think Leon explained it best why Superman is better than people thing.
"Sure, he's got all these incredible powers at his disposal, but it's the RESTRAINT he placed on himself NOT to use those powers"
. THAT'S where Superman's true heroic traits come in. He could smash Lex into pulp if he really wanted to, but he's controlling himself NOT to beat someone into a pulp.
Now, as far as the use of Villains? Well, the general concept behind the original Lex/Supes conflict was always supposed to be Brains Vs. Brawn. However, as the years went by and the influx of new writers took over, that conflict dissolved into something like we have today. We are sick and tired of Lex because he's NOT in his original role of brains/brawn but instead more of a 'manipulator' than actual mastermind. That's sort of lowering the 'Lex Luther' character, and makes him weaker than he should as a foil to Superman's physical powers.
As far as the other gang of villains go. Superman's had a few pop up here and there that he could just wallop on all day long. Just the writers opt NOT to use that concept, and try to tell a story more 'intellectual' than 'physical'.
I agree that Superman's NOT the hero he once was, and that's a shame. But I can not agree that he's "washed up".

So he's great because he doesn't use his powers? If you are saying that Lex should represent brains, and that Superman would represent brawn-- which is what I think you were implying-- and you also say that Lex should be portrayed as a criminal mastermind, then I don't understand what would be good about Superman holding back on his 'brawn.' I mean why is that sort of control a good thing? That's like you having enough self control to stop bathing. Sure its good to have self control but why is it good to restrict something that would help a good cause? I'm not trying to be condescending, I'm trying to understand your point.

I think the best way to explain restraint versus full power is this. Superman is much like Spider-Man in that with great power comes great responsibility. Yes he's a strong being, and if a guy like Batman pissed him off, he could pretty much punch him from Gotham to Metropolis, and back again. But then he'd be a villain, not a hero. So for all intents and purposes, he has to restrain his power in order to make sure it doesn't corrupt what he represents. He only needs what strength he uses to defeat foes like Darkseid, Braniac, and Metallo. And most of the time, he uses his enemies' egos against them. As smart as Luthor is, Superman uses Luthor's over confidence against him. Time after time. Yes we know, Luthor is the Greatest Criminal Mind of Our Time, but Superman is an man who overcomes that in order to save the world from a megalomaniac. So even with the Brains versus Brawn conflict, the other battle that's significant in these two is that of humility and ego, which always works in Superman's favor. You know that you are the best at something, but you screw up, and all that means nothing because you got taken down. That's what Lex learns the hard way when fighting Supes.
Superman has the best powers ever but I want to see him have to take out thousands of guys in one comic and the next issue make him take on a guy who can take Sups punishment for 12 pages. His powers go to waist and if you want to THINK read a fucking BOOK!!!!! If someone could write a superman novel that didn't suck I would read it and that is were Lex could reveal his plan for a page if it's well written, If Michael Reaves and Steve Perry wrote the book like they wrote Death Star I would buy three copies
