Superman died and even that couldn't save him. He's washed up. Superman returns sucked like a Hoover. Every movie has Lex Luthor ( is that misspelled?) he doesn't do shit. Superman has all these powers but no one to use them on. He has no villain to just wail on for two comics then come back to do it again. Doomsday's OK but not that interesting.
The Christopher Reeves movies did well because no one made any other heroes we have mavel with spider-man, Iron Man, and The avengers. We all know DC has a mush better hero to look up to.
I don't get all the love for batman. I mean, I understand it, but I disagree. I think he gets far too much credit. Yes, he's a bad ass normal in a world of super-powered beings, but there's more than one of those. There's any number of heroes in DC alone that do their job without superpowers. The Question, Green Arrow, Wildcat, most of batman's partners in gotham, the list goes on I'm sure. He's not the only hero to survive by his wits, and he's not even the most original! At his core, he's basically a carbon copy of Zorro. Wealth? Check. Butler? Check. Hidden lair below mansion? Check. Childhood Trauma? Check. Foppish alter-ego? Check.
The thing I hate about batman is how ridiculous it becomes. I can believe 'world's greatest detective', but at some point someone decide he had to be greatest at everything. At this point, the list of his abilities becomes farcical, in league with Superman in the sixties. Suddenly he's an expert in all biology, strategy, chemistry, combat, astrology, astronomy, astrophysics, metallurgy, zoology, anything else that you could possibly think of! I don't know how he has time to learn everything about every field and still be Batman, Bruce Wayne, and remember his parents!
I finally read the first two volumes of All Star Superman and I gotta say they THEY BORED THE HELL OUT OF ME. It was bland and pointless. Not to mention him now being resistant to green Kryptonite getting rid of his only real weakness, but giving Lois Lane his powers. Your only recent example sucks
Well, since most comic critics and readers actually liked All Star Superman, so I'm afraid your in a minority.
My advice, try to keep on reading maybe you'll end up liking it. I mean the first 2 issues of the third Blue Beetle were about average and the comic itself ended up great.
The thing about All-Star is that it's very VEEEEERY Morrison-y. It's quite unorthodox.
But Spyro, you're missing the point. That book is so NOT about how powerful Supes is. I mean, Morrison throws out numbers like "10 quintillion tons" like they're nothing. It's like an afterthought.
The whole idea is like, despite all of his abilities, he only has a limited amount of time left and what would he do with it. It's exploring the PERSONAL limitations that he faces (ie. Pa Kent dying, being helpless in Bizarroworld, etc) and placing him in situations where his ridiculous amount of power does him next to NO good.
I thought it was only ok in my first read-through, but I read it again for something I'm writing and really enjoyed it.
Yeah I have to agree Kimura, the personal limitations are what interest me. I don't really care if there is anyone anywhere that can defeat superman, Good in it's purest form can never be beat, why try, but to show the human side and show superman as even though having god like powers superman can still struggle with things we as humans deal with daily and conquer. I have loved the all star superman.
Also loving the new krypton line as well. I guess I am more of a Kal-El fan than of actually superman. to me Superman is who the humans see him as, where kalel is who he is, good and bad.
