Star Wars Trilogy & Beyond - The Most Over Rated Films of All Time

I was just listening to some guys at work talking about movies and, as is often the case, they got around to comparing classic movies of their youth to recent ones and invariably Star Wars came up.  To be precise the latest ones which everyone in the group agreed were so disappointing to them.  I was okay until they said how they'd failed to live up to the original trilogy.   I had to step in at that point and try and bring the conversation back down to earth.  These guys, and everyone else who says the same thing, seem to forget that the original films were no cinematic masterpieces either.  Acting?  Hokey (just like now).  Sword/light sabre play?  I've seen better in the old swashbucklers Errol Flynn used to be in.  As for the plots?  Come on man, Lucas borrowed from better westerns and Akira Kurosawa's the Hidden Fortress all of which, story wise and thematically are far superior to Star Wars.  And to be clear, I saw them when they first came out and thought this.  The only saving grace was the special effects which were ground breaking.  But, as far as them letting down the standard set forth by Episodes 4,5,6 (I laugh everytime I hear that)?  C'mon!

Another over rated movie is the original Conan the Barbarian (1982).  Man, I was so looking forward to this flick when it came out because I'm such a huge Robert E. Howard fan (even though he was a bit on the prejudiced side it's cool because it was the early part of the 20th century and he was from Texas).  The movie was alright as far as some of the things they did with the sword play but it was obvious John Milius who penned the script as well as directing wasn't really a fan of the genre.  They did a snatch and grab on some of the better books and tried to mesh them together. As soon as the Vanir raiders hit Conanville and wiped everyone out it was gonna be mediocre at best.  The Cimmerians were feared fighters and Thulsa Doom and his boys rolled through like it was nothing.  But, my biggest complaint is that, with the exception of his fights in the gladiator ring (SMH), he never won a single pivotal fight without assistance.  How heroic is that?

The original trilogy is amazing!  It's the prequel trilogy that has ruined Star Wars for the world (**** YOU LUCAS!)!

For the world, huh?

Then how come millions of people around the world (not only children, but adults) tune in to a TV show centered around Star Wars?

How come millions of dollars around the world are spent on DVDs, action figures, video games, etc. around Star Wars?

How come millions of people around the world still watch any Star Wars film on DVD?

The answer?

Because those millions of people actually have a life and they don't let disappointment blind them of the goodness of simple entertainment.

In other words...

The only GOOD prequel was Revenge of the Sith because that was what gave those that loved the series reasons why characters like Obi Wan, Darth Vader, and even Yoda where who they were in the originals.  It's The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones that were all sorts of suck, though I was not as negative toward them when I first saw them.
Lucas' problem with Star Wars is that he is in love with the special effects and isn't that great a story teller.  He's a really good concept guy but not great at dialogue or story.  Plus, he fails to realize you don't need to explain everything.  As a matter of fact it's good to not explain certain things.  Was I the only one who heard the metaclorin to Force ratio explanation and felt let down?  You mean that's it?  Kinda like when I learned where rainbows come from.  That's it?

So, just because millions of people tune in and buy memorabilia and DVDs and stuff that makes them classics?  There goes my Twilight criticisms!

You must have looked like a dick. There is nothing wrong with having an opinion that sways from the majority from time to time, but dont force it on the world. The first 3 are classics that have influenced generations of film makers from Ridley Scott onwards. They managed to create an entire world that felt real and make people care about its inhabitants. Compare that with the prequels, which have sterile environments and characters that feel genuine - of course they are a major let down.

?  I must have looked like a dick?  Uh, no because the other folks I saw the movie with pretty much said the same thing.  Plus, I don't know anyone that gets that worked up over someone not liking a movie as much as they do.  I assume it's their prerogative to do so.  As for me "forcing my opinion on the world" what is this site all about?  Giving opinions on entertainment.  Our own individual opinions.  If you like something and I say I don't am I forcing my opinion on you?  When I hear/heard people going on and on about how great The Dark Knight was/is are they forcing their opinion on me or just telling me what their opinion is?

Whenever someone tells me I need to do research to like a movie I'm always like, "What?"  Do research to like a movie? This is especially the case when they invoke the trilogy (now the whateveritisyousayforsix-ilogy.  Unlike most of the peeps who say this to me I saw each and everyone of the first movies when they first came out.  Not years later on HBO or VHS or DVD but when they first came out.  My opinion has not wavered.  Special effects cool!  The forest chase scene in ROTJ very, very cool.  As for the fight scenes being superior it takes a lot more than someone doing acrobatic moves and twirling around to make a fight scene better (Darth Maul - extremely cool).  But, for me to say any of them are great movies?  Sorry, not gonna happen.  I enjoyed them.  Appreciate their social significance in pop culture and movies but can't say they're great.  To me Star Wars is like The Beatles - good bud vastly over rated.

Yes, I have seen them multiple times; each time reinforcing my assesment.  Look, I don't think the movies suck I just don't think they're as good as a lot of other people think they are.  Similar to my not thinking The Usual Suspects was that great; or The Sixth Sense (prefer Unbreakable myself).  I've seen all of these movies multiple times.  I don't really think a strong argument is referring to what other people say when you're discussing a movie with someone who has also seen it.  Kinda like saying, "Hey, just stick with it dude.  By the fourth or fifth viewing you'll see what we're talking about."  What?  You mean I got to watch these movies multiple times to appreciate how good they are?  That makes no sense.  Godfather?  First time out - loved it.  Enter the Dragon - first time out loved it.  Batman/The Dark Knight - first time out loved them.  Aliens; The Predator; Terminator; Shawshank Redemption...well you see my point.  My reference about the fight scenes was in response to something someone else said.  Do I believe the prequels are weaker than the originals?  Yes, but then again, story wise that's not saying much.  Much of the allure folks have with the story line and iconic characters of Star Wars is a testament of their limited movie reference at the time of their early viewings of those films.  For those of us who were already avid movie fans we appreciated them of course but weren't as blown away as people who had a more limited movie viewing history and thought these tropes and characters were distinctly original and as a result more iconic.  It's all relative.  To someone watching Kobe Bryant or LeBron James they're incredible.  For those of us who saw Doctor J, Magic Johnson, Charles Barkley and Michael Jordan in their prime also we're like yeah those guys are good but...  It's the same thing with movies if you've seen it before you're not as blown away.

Your opinion is that the original Star Wars trilogy are overrated. I respectfully disagree.

When Star Wars erupted on the scene in 1977, it was hugely original in that it was a swashbuckling, fairytale set in space with state-of-the-art imagery to back it up. True, it was influenced by comic books such as Flash Gordon/Buck Rogers, but no-one had seen it done to this quality. Such a premise at the time was potentially disasterous, but it was executed with such flair in so many areas it blew many audience members away, becoming a phenomenon. The combination of great characters, the ground breaking special effects, the imagery (such as the convincing 'used future' look, and the opening scene) and accessiblity to a wide audience broke the mold for the Sci-Fi adventure genre, and remains unequalled there. And the second movie followed it up perfectly to satisfy most. RotJ was weaker, but by no means is it a bad movie.

You may not like the original Star Wars as much of others, but the sheer quality of the package they offer means I don't think they're overrated at all.

I totally respect your opinion and agree to a point, that first shot for instance is breath taking and indeed iconic.  The visuals were unlike any we'd ever seen at the time.  I concede and wholeheartedly agree on each and every point.  However, the acting and story line just always seemed weak to me.  I actually like the movies, but none of them are in my top ten in regards to best films ever.  I view them sort of like Avatar is viewed nowadays.  Great visuals and special effects but is it a great movie?  Nope, but is it iconic and has it created a world wide sensation; marketing; and changed the way future films of that sort will be made?  Yep.  I was around when Star Wars burst on to the scene and the hoopla surrounding it at that time is tthe same as it was for Avatar.  A whole new generation of movie goers will hold it up as the gold standard of sci-fi space fantasy for years to come.  Now, I concede that Star Wars (the first three) are the gold standard, and deservedly so.  But, I also think timing has a lot to do with their place in history.  Like I said, and have said, I do like the films I just don't bow down whenever they're mentioned or feel irrestibly compelled to watch them whenever they're on.  Other lesser known movies however, draw me in and I have to watch them.  Godfather - gotta watch.  Shawshank Redemption - gotta watch.  Aliens - gotta watch.  Predator - gotta watch.  But hey, that's just me.  I respectfully agree to disagree and don't belittle your or anyone else's opinion.  I also have to respect your justification which I find compelling.
