Star Wars: A Clone Trooper Hero named Marrt
I'm not exactly sure where to post this topic as it relates to a comic book story about Star Wars but it is related to the TV show The Clone Wars which is related to the Star Wars movie franchise so I'll just post it here as an in-between.
I stumbled upon this entry on wookiepedia the other day (really should stay away from there because all it does is either piss me off or depress me).
Marrt is a clone trooper who during the Clone Wars uncovers information that an official of the Republic was gasp! selling weapons to the Separtists and two senators are discovered to be involved as well (ummm... the freaking head of the Republic is leading the Separtists).
In a daring mission in which 3 of his squad die, Marrt captures the official and retrieves the data tying the official to the Separtists and implicating the 2 Senators. Good job, Marrt! You really put a crimp in the plans of those nasty Separatists.
Good thing Palpatine's holo-prints weren't all over the place. That would have been akward to say the least.
"oh, ummm... yes about that... Order 66! Dammit, I was hoping to stretch this con out a while longer!"
Marrt gets busted up in the course of the mission and is hospitalized. He requests to only speak to the Jedi to turn over his evidence - not his superiors in the Clone Army but to the Jedi. Are they running this war then?
Anyhoo the clencher is when our favoritely-named Jedi, Kit Fisto, says: "Brave scout, you honour the Republic with your heroism!"
Oh, the bittersweet irony! And it gets better:
"Fisto considered Marrt's actions on Belgaroth brave and reminded [Ahsoka] Tano—who had been reluctant to go to Sacorria in the belief that a meeting with some wounded clone was a waste of time—that even the actions of a single soldier could be very important"
and
"Ahsoka learns a valuable lesson in clone courage when she and Kit Fisto hear the tale of a badly wounded soldier."
Yes I hope she remembered that valuable lesson later later when she probably got shot in the back by one of those courageous clones when Order 66 came down.
ARE THESE PEOPLE OUT OF THEIR GODDAMN MINDS?
What is the freaking point of making any of these clones herioc or personable when we all know they will eventually gun down their Jedi allies without the least bit of hesistation and later they will dominate the galaxy thru fear while killing a couple of defenseless Tatooine moisture farmers and a bunch of Jawas over some droids.
There is just something so wrong trying to make these clones anything more than Palpatine's willing pawns. I hate the whole clone army idea to begin with but if you are going to use it you shouldn't make them heroes nor give them human-like characteristics unless they are bad to begin with and are just playing the Jedi.
THEY'RE BAD GUYS FOR FUCK'S SAKES! They're aren't tragic characters like Anakin/Vader who are seduced by evil - they basically are evil.
"Brave" Marrt and all his clone buddies were cloned from a disreputable individual under highly suspicious circumstance which we know was by Palpatine aka the fucking evilest man in the galaxy who apparently had these clones programmed from the start to one day wipe out the Jedi. And later they become Stormtroopers, the faceless jackbooted thugs of the Original Trilogy.
This is why I don't get the Clone Wars TV series where at times we are suppose to feel for the clones.
What bugs me with this particular story and the message of the importance of one soldier's actions is that it seems to want to be a salute to the soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan but it comes off as creepy due to the circumstances mentioned above and I doubt the writers are clever enough to see the irony and insult in this.

...and people wonder WHY some consider ALL of the Prequels an abomination? The New 'Clone Wars' series is a symptom of a disease, started by Lucas and continued on by contact. Everything he touches today becomes more bat-shit crazy and stupid as time goes on. If something is not done soon, I fear Start Wars may become terminal.

Good analogy about it being a disease that spreads. the Prequels were a bad idea which in turn created more bad ideas that just keeps spreading. i can't understand why anyone Lucas or this writer would want to make stories of the clones being heroes when later they turn on the Jedi. Just seems very odd to me.
And worse is the message it tries to give the reader of the simple actions of a soldier. In another setting it would work but here it comes off as ironic since Marrt is clone made to serve an evil overlord who has been running the whole Clone Wars from both sides

Does being cloned from someone who turned out to be evil make you inherintly evil? I don't think so. My impression is that most of the clones are dumbed down in varying ways but they can still learn and grow like anyone else which makes them superior to droids in combat. They have all been imprinted with something however that controls them and they have no choice over it, they could be your best friend and never think of hurting you but as soon as order 66 comes in they have no choice but to kill you, they arent just following orders which is obvious otherwise we would have seen at least a hint of hesitation. I got most of this from watching the films although I do know a little about the clones like how in films 4,5 and 6 the empire allowed normal people to become storm troopers, this was probably to cover Lucas not being able to hire hundreds of actors of the same height tho.

I think if you serve the cause of evil that makes you evil by default or at least part of the problem.
With the clones they come off as ammoral who have no standards or morals. They as you say can be your friend one minute then try to kill you the next without any hesitation. As such perhaps they are more dangerous than an evil person. They're like a tool or a timebomb waiting to go off.
Personally I've always hated the idea of the clones the way they were presented in Episode II. they should have been on the other side and the Republic was forced draft its own people creating a militarized society.
This kind of story about Marrt just seems twisted because of the setting it's in. In another story setting it would be a fine message but here? Twisted

yeah it seemed pretty far-fetch even in this far-fetch universe that the Republic couldn't muster up an army out of the billions of planets it has.
I think it just boils down to lazy writing and very little foresight. Lucas needed the Jedi wiped out and the Empire established with all its blazing guns, storm troopers, and Star Destroyers and the Clone Trooper storyline took care of this despite its glaring plotholes and huge number of questions that it brings to mind. For example if this planet was in the business of making entire clone armies complete with weapons and battle ships, how were they NOT known to everybody in the galaxy including one 900 year old Jedi resident? You'd think there'd be clone armies running all over the place. You'd think the Republic would have nuked the place since it would be an endlessly source of headaches as every two-bit conqueror would buy a clone army and attack their neighbors with it. You'd think the Jedi would have been awfully suspicious when they found out the order for these clones came from a dead Jedi and their template was found working for their enemies.
At the end of the day, the whole clone army storyline is bad and should have allowed to die with the Prequels. Why Lucas felt the need to continue dragging out a flawed storyline other than for some more cash is beyond me. He's already got enough money to buy a sizable European principality if he wanted to so there's no need for this continual turd polishing
