...or is it Austinian?

Regardless, I finally bit the bullet this year and made the decision to pack up and move from my creatively-dead southern Oregon hippybilly town and find someplace where I felt like I actually belonged. Someplace where I could casually mention a theory about the latest Spider-Man arc without getting blank stares in response. Someplace with live music. Someplace with really, really good BBQ. Someplace where I could catch a movie premiere or sneak preview to review for my website (www.bleepinggeek.com). Someplace with actual technology jobs (the highest tech thing here in Grants Pass is cropping photos for a jewelry catalog). Someplace where it's actually summer for more than a week a year.

Well... guess what? Turns out that Austin, TX is just about perfect.

So, this is a call to all of my fellow Spill fans in Austin - HEEEELLP MEEEE!

Where are the good places to live in Austin?
Best comic book shops?
Best bars for a movie geek to hang out in?
Best places to eat?

What do you like best about Austin? What don't you like?

What's midday traffic like? Hell, what does it smell like downtown? I don't care - I just want to know everything I can about the city I'll be calling home from people who actually live there.

Thanks!

I lived in the Cedar Park / Leander area near Austin for well over 8 years, but I never much cared for downtown traffic or morning, lunch or evening rush hour time schedule.
See - that's exactly the kind of thing I'm looking for, thank you.

I had heard people refer to Alamo Drafthouse but I guess I assumed it was just a typical theater. After doing a bit more reading, I'll probably be dropping a lot of money there :) Do you have a favorite location, or are all of them equally good? Same goes for the comic book stores - in your opinion, what's the best one?

The heat actually isn't that big of an issue - I'm a total weirdo about that kind of thing. I love 90+ degree weather. Grew up in CA, so anytime it drops lower than 70 degrees, I'm grabbing jackets and blankets and cranking the heater up. That's part of why I don't really belong here in Oregon (snow is the devil).
Looks like Southwest Austin is kinda pricey. Are there cheaper areas in Austin to live? I make enough money to live pretty much anywhere, but why spend more on rent when you don't have to?
Found a place in NW Austin that seems pretty cool, but I'm thinking that it might be too far away from anything fun.

I'd rather live someplace closer to the city, y'know "where all the action is" and all that. Or is Austin small enough that I can live further out and still not feel like I'm dying of boredom in a suburb somewhere?
Why Austin?
Have you ever been to Austin? I love that place! Live music all the time, there's a lot of really fun movie and film events and festivals, there's a bevy of game companies, film companies, comic book companies, etc in the area, it's on a river (one of the few things I like about living in Grants Pass, OR). Plus, I like Texas. There's just something overwhelmingly "American" about the state, like apple pie and John Wayne movies.

Plus, it doesn't hurt that I'll have a lot of fellow Spillians (or Spillites, or Spilldos, or Spilleramos, or SpillPoppers) to hang out with. Really looking forward to Austin Draft House nights, Spill Parties, hanging out at the Nomad or at Austin Books.
...or did you mean, "why Austin, instead of something nearby like Pflugerville or Round Rock"?

In that case it's because I'm moving from a teeny little small town (and all that that implies, as Kent Mansley would say) that's 40 minutes away from anything even remotely interesting or entertaining, so I'm ready to get back to living in an actual city. Like... IN a city. With buses. And noise. And people. And stores that are open past 6pm. :)
Buses and noise and people.

When exactly did pollution, headaches, and overcrowding become a good thing?
when california became so badass. I could never leave all the pollution, headaches, and overcrowding. It is so worth it. All the other states i've been too weren't near as enjoyable. But I suppose some people enjoy the quiet life. MAYBE when i'm retired
