Okay I just beat this game and I'll tell you. It's at best a rental. The game's environment is dark. And I don't mean that in a gritty way. I mean I can't see anything, not that you want to since the graphics are horrible (think silent hill homecoming but with half the textures). There is barely any light sources in the game. The only means to see is through your lighter which illuminates about two feet around you. You can have access to two other light sources (flashlight and camera) but they are even worse. The camera lights up the entire area but blurs your vision, because for some reason your flashing your eyes instead of the damn room. The flashlight has a very narrow beam of light that moves all over the place. Light is essential to this game since there are traps all over the place. See that tripwire? No? Well too bad. Bam, shotgun. Back to checkpoint. This is the most common way to die in the game. 90% of your deaths will be by shotgun tripwire. Though it is cool you can set up three different traps using components you find in desks and drawers. You can use these traps to kill other people who are trying to kill you because you have a key in your stomach for freedom.
This brings me to the combat mechanics. They are terrible. I don't know what jigsaw did to Tapps (the main character) but the guy is slow. He throws punches like he's under water. Then the weapons are worse. He swings a bat like it weighs fifty pounds. This ends up with you trying to swing your bat to hit the attacker, only to have him punch you and stop your attack. It is very frustrating. Apparently you can use the dodge button, but I have yet to see it work once. There are only three types of mini-games (aka puzzles) in the game. One where you need to align power nodes, align gears and align pipes. The power nodes ones are easily the most tedious. I swear I had one that filled the screen with twenty different nodes and dozens of cords to attach to them.
The only thing that kept me going in the game was the cool main puzzles. You have to save around half a dozen people who are connected to Tapps. See them die is pretty cool, but there is an imbalance issue with their puzzles. Some of their puzzles are easy and other are so difficult you will scream at the top of your lungs. So do not buy. If you're into puzzles then this game will peak your interest. If you're looking for an action game then look somewhere else. If you want to know the two endings then scroll down.
***SPOILERS***
You are giving two doors to go through. FREEDOM from your obsession or TRUTH of the jigsaw killer. If you go through the freedom door, that frees everyone in the asylum and even shows you future newspaper clippings on the wall, but then Tapps gets super emo and sits on a couch and blows his brains out with a revolver. If you choose truth you continue to chase jigsaw outside where you beat the shit out of him. But then you find out it isn't him. It was the wife of your former partner ,who you accidentally got killed, who you freed earlier. She was to keep Tapps on track. She goes through some door where she gets killed by two shotguns. Tapps then teleports or some shit to a table in a psyche ward or a torture table (about to be sliced in half by an axe). He dies. The fucking end. That's right. Both endings suck. He dies in both. Hope you enjoyed the rental.
