If it's crap... We'll tell you

Today something happened which was quite unsettling. Early this morning, I was speaking to a co-worker in his partitioned cubicle. It was close enough to hear the receptionist greet a client. I could gather who she was from the greeting. It was an early morning meeting to work out the finer details of this prototype job I’d been involved with over the last few weeks. I had told our receptionist that I was expecting this customer, would be awaiting her arrival, and that she should be escorted to the shop floor to meet me.

At this point the receptionist felt it necessary to mention, “There’s no missing him. He’s a hundred kilos of man-meat.”

My stomach sank. I felt like a dog as I followed them into the factory seconds later, pretending nothing happened. Growing up as an ethnic minority in the South, you would think I’d have a thicker skin. I mean, I was called nigger like it was my surname. But this was all too real and cut too deep. I was upset the rest of the day. Having grown up with the respect of others as one of my father’s highest priorities, this somehow blindsided me.

Even now that I’m home enjoying a Scotch, it’s wearing on me. Am I being too precious? Should I make a stink about it, or should I just let it go?

Korey here. If they were referring to you, take it as a compliment and don't say anything. It's not like it's affecting your job, especially since you have a higher position. No one is using their position to force to do something you don't want to do.

If were to affect only me, I'd be more apt to agree.
I'm not sure if this is how she would talk about anyone. It may be a case of me being too familiar. If it's just a case of "jungle fever", that's something we can settle between ourselves (not like that). I just don't want a bunch of junior engineers banging down my door with this problem.
I'm also unsure of her level familiarity with this client. I'm new relatively here (3months) and I know that these two have known each other for at least three years. I could kick up a stink, but given the job shortages; those kicks could be my last for a while.

I don't think you're being too precious. Workplace respect is important. So my diagnosis. Talk to them. Let them know what they said was the wrong thing.

Off top, you've got to say something. I mean if i were in your shoes i would have addressed that as soon as possible. i.e pull her to the side.

Be vocal about the matter but in a tasteful manner. Speak out.... TODAY.

Personally I'd just let it go, but I can totally see why this would be unsettling to you. It's not just some random stranger referring to you that way, it's someone you obviously know doing it. In fact if you just bring up the fact that you heard her say it, she will most likely be too embarrassed to look at you for a while. So the question is, do you want to bring this up to the receptionist and make it a bit uncomfortable at the workplace, or would you want to just let it go and eventually get over it (which I'm sure you will much faster than the receptionist will).

Thanks for pointing that out. I debated whether to use the term or not. It has come into such common use and I went with it for that fact. Misnomer, yes...understood, definately.
