Trust me. The controls are better in the PS2 version.
There isn't much difference between the PS2 version and the GameCube version, except added game play in the PS2 version.

I have the game on both the GameCube and the Playstation 2.
The only thing I like more about the GameCube version is that the controls are slightly more intuitive, but after about ten minutes even that complaint melts away.

The Playstation 2 port has way more content in terms of additional costumes, weapons, and gameplay.
I haven't played it on the PC, but whoever told you the Playstation 2 version was crappy in any way needs to have the taste slapped out of his mouth.

If only they'd put all the Resident Evil games on the X-Box 360....

The wii version is best but I would go for PS2 otherwise.
