Red Riding Hood, the new big screen adaptation of the age old fairy tale, is set for release on April 15th next year and follows the story of a young girl who falls for an orphaned woodcutter all the while living in a medieval village under threat by a werewolf.

When first hearing the title Red Riding Hood and seeing the cover art you wouldn't be amiss in thinking that this was going to be the dark, grown up retelling of the Grimm fairy tale that many people have hoped for, for a while now. But oh how wrong you are, which is spelled out for you in no uncertain terms as you watch the new teaser trailer. That's right they might as well of tattooed ANGST! on your eyeballs because that's what this films got in spades and is totally unabashed about telling you exactly that, proudly proclaiming "From the director of Twilight". I can hear the sound of fancy dress shop tills ringing which quite aptly harmoniously resonates with the sound my rifle makes when it reloads.

Another thing this film has is Style, with a capital S, although style pretty much amounts to "what looks good with red?... erm snow?" as little Red sports a ridiculously oversized and unwieldy cape and everyone looks like they've been in the salon for a good 8 hours before starting their day. A fun game I like to play is to take the average life expectancy for a person living in medieval Europe, 30, find out which actors are over that age and summarily dismiss them from the film for being dead, which would be doing Gary Oldman a favour.

So it's pretty easy to draw comparisons between this film and Twilight right off the bat. Seemingly crammed to the bit with teen angst and inappropriately chiselled werewolfy goodness it draws yet another connection to the aforementioned franchise in the director one Ms Cathrine Hardwicke, who of course directed the first Twilight film a cinematic master piece (in some parallel dimension, most likely where Satan rules over all of us).

So what are your thoughts?.... excited... weary. Or are you, like me, going out to find your 2011 crows nest early this year?

Please find the teaser trailer in the comments section.

Well, its hard not to see the resemblence. The movie is pretty much marketed to the Twilight crowd, but I don't think it will be nearly as successful. Down here in Alabama, the Twilight craze has down sized considerably, its all True Blood now >_>

I'm not a Twilight fan, of course, but you know what? Just judging from the two trailers, I would watch this movie 1,000 times over the new Teen Wolf series.

I almost hope it does well, I'd love to see an over dramatic, over stylized, twilight-esque version of Rumpelstiltskin.
Good lord this looks awful. What the hell is Oldman doing in this tripe and why is he in a purple tunic?

This doesn't even strike me as having the quality of Twilight...not that I'm saying Twilight has quality. This just looks so bad that it will probably be sharing a rung with Van Helsing on the "Hollywood takes a stab at folklore" ladder.

I find it very offputting when a story set in the distant past has very modern looking characters. I don't think that fauxhawks were present in eastern europe in the 14-1500's.

Eugh... I saw the pretty cool picture for this on the Apple trailers site so I clicked through; what a disappointment!

It looks like another angst-ridden tweenage load of cack.

/Rant

When I first saw the trailer, I was like what kind of crap is this?  Then her name came up and then it all became clear.  Yeah, not looking for much in this. This is certainly just a cop-out from Hardwicke, but the kids will just eat it up like chocolate ice cream with sprinkles.

That's exactly what I thought when I saw the trailer, it looks like Red Riding Bella.

"I love you!"
"I'm a monster."
"I don't care!"

It almost feels like Hardwicke's starting to get pigeon holed. And fast. And to be fair, Twilight didn't exactly have the best source material, y'know. What is Seyfried even going in this? She's better than this, I know she is.

Wow when i heard about this i was excited and then i saw "from the director of twilight", and i pretty much knew how the rest of the trailer was gonna turn out.

Sounds like a goddamn porno. I'm up at night crying for the sake of Gary Oldman.

I curse at this movie! I know already that I will hate it... but because Gary Oldman is in it, I'll have to see it....

I may not be alive by the time the movie is over

Normally I say don't judge a 'book by it's cover' and 'let's reserve till it comes out'. But seriously, guys in the middle ages with shaved faces let alone shaved chests!!! Fuuuuck this piece of shit. It's like they want to appeal to all the tweens and they are making twilight versions of all these properties. They have a dumb ass teen wolf tv show that looks like twilight. There's half a dozen different vampire shows out now. And they have a movie called 'Bestly' which looks like a twilightly retelling of the beauty and the beast. Damn, I guess there's no point in complaining cuz they will keep making them as long as they keep making money.
I wish they would expand on the original story, but in stead it looks like the movie is going to be some old bull. This makes me said, because the original story is grate, and would make a good movie.
Whats next, Humpty Dumpty?
