I realize a few things;

These are the lasts days, the end times, this time in recession...sucks, writer's strikes REALLY hurt us movie/ tv fans, and the complete invasion of 3-D format precedes the Four Horsemen.

Ok, maybe not that last one.

Why is it that one of the greatest mediums of entertainment is now more than ever congested with remakes, re-imaginings, biopics, and reboots? I know times are tough, and remakes are "the safe bet" nowadays, but how long can this go on? Studios are THAT greedy to test this. I realize that as long as people continue to pay for crap, they'll keep making it (looking at you- guys behind Date/Epic Movies). I used to get pissed about remakes, now I just see it as a sign of the times. There really is 'nothing new under the sun'. Watching movies often, you can see influences from other films. Besides the money, many films are remade on the ideas of a built-in fanbase, bringing something beloved to a new generation, studios being lazy, and audiences with bad memory. (How much time justifies a reboot anyway?) What can we as movie fans do about this? What happens when Hollywood/ studios cross THAT line...on a regular basis in the most sacrilegeous way?
There are some stand-alone films revered as classics that serve as testament to the pinnacle of creative expression and man's contribution to society. EVERYBODY has films that they personally feel this way about, along with treasures the majority of people collectively regard as classic. What do you do when every movie you held dear is rehashed tastelessy, and total originality is dashed for profit? Well, what can you do really besides cherish the original. I know there are brilliant minds out there; we need THOSE writers, directors now more than ever. I wonder if there is an organization that overall protects properties/certain movies from being remade/continued (despite execs & freedom of speech). Think of all the shitty movies that could have been aborted & classics preserved without clones.

When Hollywood remakes Casablanca, look for me on the west coast Spilleos. I'm stockpiling torches and molotovs right now.

I think the Star Wars remake will be the last straw.
I think they'll be the first step in a long healing process.
If you want to heal anything, heal the prequels.

Here's a fun article for you to read from Cracked about remakes and adaptations and reboots. They've been going on since the dawn of film, and people only act as if it's something new because no one bothers to go back and look at some of the olden turds cranked out. Some of those films that you hold dear? They could be remakes.

You're basically asking Hollywood to abandon a formula that has made them a ton of cash, and that's silly. There will always be original films being put out by independent film production companies as well. Don't blow a gasket.

Well said One Inch Punch,
I forgot to really touch on the indie scene. I was referring to it when I mentioned brilliant minds. Nice to have discussions that engage perspectives. It's just a little discouraging always hearing about things in the industry that breaks your spirit to where the reaction is: "Really?...they're making THAT?....wow".

25+ years of living in Los Angeles I guess...

Do you have the link to that article on Cracked? I tried pulling it up- no joy, I definitely wanna check it out.
So 'Punch, is there a movie pitch, or remake in development that makes you think: " Aww hell......seriously!?"

Honestly though you will see that a majority of films now a days are remakes, reboots, sequels, prequels, etc.  Sure they have some great original films each year, but it is crystal clear that they are losing creativity and originality.  Hollywood needs a burst of creativity and if they don't get that burst soon, then the real film fans are going to lose their freaking minds when they come out with a title like "Transformers 8: Redemption of Optimus"

Sometimes I wish I was in the 70's.
