Collateral (re-watch)- Strong Full Price

Just saw Rango (2011) for the first time, and I saw the extended version, but I'd give it a 7.5 and that knowing that I usually give everything higher rating than what they deserve.

Watched The Devils (Ken Russell, 1971). This film has a chequered past, mainly due to Warners getting cold feet and the so called "moral" climate of the time. It's a timeless story of one man's desire to stand up against unsurmountable odds based on Aldous Huxley's superlative "documentary novel" the Devils Of Loudon.

This BFI dvd is a lovely but flawed thing, featuring as it does the X certificate (18) print released in the UK, sadly Warners are frightened of xtian whackos who have a flimsy faith when something as ephemeral as a piece of celluloid can dent it, it seems so have never released this before on DVD.

Which seems a shame. 10/10.

Mysterious Skin
my rating: B+
Not perfect, and heavily flawed in the writing department in the first half, but deeply affecting in so many ways. Heartbreaking, unsettling, touching, and very funny. Excellent acting, especially from Joseph Gordon Levitt, Bill Sage, and Brady Corbet. The final shot is as chilling and moving as anything I've seen on screen. Surprisingly, this very fucked up film (that I think recieved the NC-17 rating) is on YouTube. You can watch it, now:

Elephant - Rental.

My Left Foot - Full Price!

Kind of other way around for me. I loved Elephant and didn't really like My Left Foot (nice poster). What were your issues with Elephant?

I didn't really understand why Gus Van Sant had to do long tracking shots for each character. It felt too long and too pointless. There were some bits which felt pointless (e.g. the long scene where the students are playing football) and it felt like he did it just to make it more arty. There were some bits I didn't understand. Like the black boy/jockey guy who wandered round the school corridors with all that chaos around but he doesn't seemed fazed by it, instead walking towards the gunmen. What was up with that?

I did enjoy the different perspectives of the characters and the ending was pretty good. It was also quite disturbing. But Van Sant just does too much in an 80 minute film and the result is pure boredom (except for the final 20 minutes).

The long tracking shots had me nervous as hell, I knew what the film was about going in. Sant brilliantly racked up the tension with those long takes, and the mundanity of each character's life made those great 20 minutes that much more effective.

I think the black kid was showing that there are no heroes in a situation like that. I think Sant was sickly teasing us with the hope that this kid may be able to stop the killer, but nope, he just goes down like everyone else. The film knocked the living fuck out of me.

Silverado- Full Price.

The Hunger Games
my rating: B (maybe B+)

Oh, cool. You posted a status saying, "I will not read the fucking book.".... Didn't seem like you liked the movie...

The movie was interesting enough, but nothing to make me want to read the fucking book.
