If nothing else, Michael Keaton's first-time directorial effort is
most certainly an engaging, albeit unorthodox, one.
Centering on two seperate, yet inevtiably
connected characters that are each at
something of a crossroads in their
respective lives'.
First up, Frank Logan (Profession; Contract Killer. Yes, I know. Quite original, ain't it...)
is the principle focus, and is helmed w/
something akin to a knowing familiarity by
Keaton. Who is suffering from what appeared to
be a bit of a crisis of conscience.
The second, Ms. Kate Frazier, a
woman doing everthing in her power to
escape from her abusive, narcotics detective
boyfriend,is portrayed by Kelly MacDonald,
sporting her native Scottish accent, no less.
Overall, this was a very well-made, & interesting
freshman feature on Keaton's part. My only real problem
w/ the film, is that it insists upon keeping the audience at
such an arm's length distance from Keaton's character, during
the majority of the running time. Only revealing just enough to
make him a dynamic anti-hero of sorts for the picture to thrive upon.
However, despite this one primary flaw, this is one I can recommend to watch
for the superb performances, the subtle, understated cinematography,
& the wonderful splashes of dark comedy.
