Lunatik posted a statusAlthough I do like this new Predators film, I don't think that it is necessarily the sequel we've been waiting for... I remember someone saying that this would be the Aliens of the Predator series; I felt like it was more like Alien 4. I did like the film for what it was, but I do have a few nit-picky things that got to me...
I do like that the human "predators" personify the title and the nature of the film, but it isn't fully explored as it could have been. None of the humans exhibit any kind of extreme ruthlessness apart from the Stans and Edwin characters, plus, you never really get to see these people in action apart from the part with the "dogs"; they're just kind of there. Even the Predators don't get into any really good action! I come to thisto see movie Preadators killing humans and I barely get any Predator!!!
But, back to the review: also, injecting just a tiny bit of logic into it- how would the Predators have known that Edwin was a ruthless murderer? I mean they obviously had some sort of surveillance on these people, but, I doubt that it was that thorough... Plus. both characters are kind of weak, although Stans' charcter can stand toe-to-toe with some of the other humans. I had figured that Edwin was a serial killler due him being the scrawniest one and smartest of the group. But, both Stans and Edwin pose no real threat to the Preadtors over all, so I wonder why these two characters were even considered as worthy game. Also, Nolad, although well acted, struck me as a bit over the top and could have been cut from the movie since he doesn't add too much to it.
The setting is almost a copy of the first Predator with a similar setting and a similar situation, but here's the difference: there was more of the Predator in the firest one! The first movie gave you a look at what the Predator was doing and what it was capable of; the second gave you that and really got you into the mythos of the predator and gave us a look at its society. Now, I am probably in the small minority that actually likes Alien vs. Predator and I there are a few things that I see that Predators borrowed: The "enemy of the enemy is my friend" line, and that the Predators hunt in groups of three.
I did enjoy the cinematography and the mood of the film. I liked the Isabelle character the most, seeing as she had some actual depth. I was entertained throughout the whole thing and was never bored, although I wish there was more consideration given to the battles and fight scenes.
Overall, I give it a: Matinee
