Ok, the numbers are in and the movie goers have spoken. Saw VI has lost the fight. After years of crashing into the number No 1 spot the sixth instalment of the gory horror losses out to a film that is a lot more discreet in its horror delivery. Supernatural horror flick Paranormal Activity was made two years ago and only now does it get seen by more movie goers. But it’s now far succeeding the numbers anyone could have predicted. And the fact it out beat the “King of Halloween” is an even bigger surprise.
Paranormal made $22 million to Saw’s $14.8 million . Now I ask why? Was the reason that people once and for all are sick to death of a Saw film each year? Or maybe the “torture porn” era is now passé and this gorilla style/documentary style filming of horror is now the way forward for the genre? Maybe it was marketing? Or maybe Paranormal Activity was just a better film all round?
I'm saying it's a mixture of reason one and two. Saw is a series that really should ended back at three. For the simple fact you killed of you bad guy and unlike other horror franchises out there Jigsaw has no supernatural powers to come back to life.
Other reason is that I think we are ready to move on. The 90’s it was stalk n’ slash. The early 2000’s torture porn. Now maybe the numbers for these two films tell a story that we are ready to move on to different and intelligent new ground. If not that then just something different for the horror genre.
In the end Saw VI made money, it had a budget of 11 million and made 14.8 million. I'm sure the executive would have loved it usual 30 million but it going to earn it weekly like every other film. The question is going to be when Saw VII comes out will it perform the same and which film it could be going against it and I think it going to be "Let me in".
The dialogue connects with young female movie goers. Male movie goers are already looking for a scary movie. Teens go to movies a lot. Good suspense is better than mediocre gore. I'd be less disgusted at the idea of going to see Saw VII (I've only gone to the theater to see the first Saw) than I would at the idea of giving "Let Me In" any money.
I would have to say its because we know pretty much what is gonna happen. A lot of torture and a lot of gore and one guy has to do somethin that either involves his own life or involving someone elses. As for Paranormal Activity, Its somethin new and we want to see the new stuff. Plus, everyone is hyping up the movie and telling all of their friends about it.
I am a huge horror fan and I love gory films but I have seen the torture movie done before so thats why I picked Paranormal Activity over Saw VI.
The reason is that it isn't torture porn/gorn and moviegoers are getting smarter. Also, mostly b/c it is a better horror film than Saw, and more scary than gruesome. Just my two cents.
Are you upset about the SIXTH movie in a series that has not only slipped in storyline and plot but also refused to introduce anything new, losing to a fresh if somewhat poorly plotted $11,000 film?
No, not at all. I think the series should have ended at three. Just found it intresting that a series that was always No1 this time of year finally has been stopped.
I don't know man. A clash of styles I guess. One extreme style of horror went up against another lesser more supernatural style and it beaout the extreme horror. For me, I'm comparing the styles of horror.
I didn't watch any of those movies (i don't like the horror genre, call me a pussy xD *waits for it*) but I am glad people grew some brain cells on the issue.
I think people seem to like horror movies like Paranormal Activity. Besides Saw is a very good franchise but it seems like they are trying to make as many as they can so they won't be forgotten.
I'm glad that Saw VI bombed because hopefully it will be the last movie in the series. People seem to be wising up since Saw VI is the exact same thing as the first 5. *reads on IMDB that Saw 7 is in development* AAAAHHHH!!!!
As far as Paranormal Activity goes I thought it was highly over rated but still worth my time and money.
