February 3, 2011: For the last five months, India has been celebrating and honoring a retired Gurkha soldier (Bishnu Shrestha) who, singlehandedly killed three bandits, wounded eight and drove off another 30. This incident occurred five months ago, and since then Shrestha has been given medals, cash and accolades for his outstanding valor and prowess. The Indian Gurkha regiment he recently retired from persuaded him to return to active duty so he could receive a cash award and a promotion. Bishnu Shrestha father had also served with the same unit, and retired from it 29 years ago.

40 men armed with knives, swords and guns stormed the train and began robbing the passengers.

Bishnu kept his peace while the gang snatched cell phones, jewelry and cash from other riders. But then, the thugs grabbed the 18 year-old girl sitting next to him and forcefully stripped her naked. Before the bandits could rape the poor girl in front of her helpless parents, Bishnu decided he had enough.

"The girl cried for help, saying ´You are a soldier, please save a sister´," Shrestha recalled. "I prevented her from being raped, thinking of her as my own sister."

Here's the part of the story that makes you cheer. He pulls out a kukri (i.e. a knife) and proceeds to kill 3 of them, injure 8 of them, and causes the rest to flee. During the battle, he suffered a severe knife injury to his left hand, from which he's now recovered.

Theres a reason nobody fucks with the ghurkas.

A friend of mine in the army told me once about a bar brawl that broke out between army and air force that noone was safe from, if you were in the bar, you got hit... Apart from a table full of ghurkas in the middle of the room. They just carried on drinking completely untouched.

Guys like bishnu shrestha make me very very glad they're on our side.

40 men armed with knives, swords and guns...

Against one guy with a knife? That's pretty fucking awesome. Who says it's stupid to bring a knife to a 40 man gunfight? Not me! No, sir!!

Okay, those guys know how to train their soldiers.
that's pretty badass, didn't even know india had ghurkas, i thought the ghurkas were only a Nepali-British regiment.
