1) Does anyone actually think the Old Boy remake is a good idea....anyone?
2) Will you be seeing the new Star Trek film....yes or no?
I host a podcast called Death to the Movies (you can find it on iTunes) and am curious to hear what the general thought is on these two subjects. Thanks!
There is no point to an Oldboy remake and there won't be one. If it happens with Will Smith, it will be shit. Remember the amazing script for I Am Legend and what happened to it once he signed on. I love the guy but movies get messed up for his stardom.
I have absolutely no idea why re-making the classics has become a trend in our day and age. I could understand if people were re-making bad movies. Maybe the idea or premise was good, but the film didn’t turn out well, so they try again, but why the classics? The whole reason they became classics is because they were great.
Has this ever turned out well?
Planet of the Apes – Disaster.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory – Disaster.
King Kong – Disaster.
In order to avoid the shame of the remake, we now have the re-boot. This has turned out well in a few cases (most notably Batman Begins / The Dark Knight), but there are just some things that shouldn’t be re-made or re-booted. Star Trek is one of them.
As I’ve said before, we don’t need another Star Trek film, we don’t need another Star Trek show, we don’t need another Star Trek anything. We’ve got ten (gong on eleven) films, four television series (I do not consider the ‘technically’ fifth series to be a show at all), and every one of these elements of the franchise available on DVD and Blue Ray.
Isn’t that enough!?
If not, then when will it be enough? Should this go on forever, or should we just enjoy what we have for once? I say stop trying to revitalize the franchise, stop trying to re-invent the franchise, stop making movies, stop making shows, just stop!
Star Trek is fine the way it is, as we have it now, just leave it alone.

some of those are definitely arguable, but there are some good one's in there as well. The films that Confused Matthew specifically pointed out were all undoubtedly horrendous.
...Dude, I said re-makes of classic films, not remakes of obscure films, cult classics, novel-to-films or stage-to-films (Payback, Dawn of the Dead, Man on Fire, Little Shop of Horrors, etc) . Some of the films on your list weren’t even remakes, they were direct sequels. I’m actually not sure what your list was suppose to conclude.
How is Oldboy a classic? It's a great film, but it's only a few years old. Plus it's not THAT well known by mainstream audiences.
Also, the original Dawn of the Dead has a bigger audience than Oldboy.
