New greatest film of all time: Vertigo?
If anyone isn't familiar with the British Film Institute's Sight & Sound poll, it's basically a call out to critics every ten years to conduct their own top ten lists of what they consider the greatest films of all time, so that there is an illustration of the change of consensus for every new generation of moviegoers.
This poll, ever since 1962, has always had Citizen Kane at the top of the list, making it the primary reason why it is considered the greatest of all films. But today, with the announcement of this decade's list, Orson Welles' film has finally been dethroned -- by Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo.
Vertigo has been climbing up the Sight & Sound list and further up the top ten with each passing decade after its release, so its claiming of the top spot may be seen as natural, further evidenced by it's place at number two in last decade's list. The exact number of votes can't be gathered for comparison right now, as the BFI's homepage is taking ages to load, probably due to the traffic created by such a big announcement.
So, what does this mean for the film community? Will Vertigo's new claim to fame stay with us for the next ten years? Will it trickle into the consciousness of everyday Joe Popcorns over time? If so, will it be difficult to let go of Citizen Kane as its former title?
I don't know.

I understand it has great filming techniques, but that's all it has, didn't care for the plot, I've seen it 3 times, and it's always been just as boring. I do like the ending though.

I never cared when it was Citizen Kane and i don't care now. How can someone say that one film out of all the films ever made was the best. My pick for greatest film is different from most if not all people on Spill.com let alone the whole world. But if critics think it is the best more power to them.

Saw the list, so what? Have been banging on about Vertigo for years, plus have you ever read Sight & Sound? Pseuds corner monthly imo. Though their "horror/fantastic" reviews were priceless if memory serves me well.
If it isn't Triumph of the Will, i could care less ha ha ha.
