If it's crap... We'll tell you

Over the past few years, I have stood by and watched horror movies from the 80's, or even 70's, get remade into very shitty movies. I personally like the Dawn of the Dead remake, but it can never be superior to the orignal. The idea for this came out of both Friday The 13th coming out soon, and also me watching the direct-to-dvd "remake" of Day of the Dead. Most of you already know about my intense hatred of the Prom Night remake. Now, I hear information about remakes of Nightmare on Elm Street, Child's Play, and even older ones such as The Creature from the Black Lagoon. So I ask, what's your opinion, or where do you stand on the cycle of horror remakes?

Well, every "new" horror movie is based on exactly the same premise as every old horror movie.

There is a protagonist who is a generally good person. Then there is some kind of myth about an evil force that most people in the movie doubt. Then there is what could be considered in it's most fundamental form simply a chase scene. Almost everybody gets killed. Ultimately the protagonist survives, learns a valuable lesson about tempting the fates, or about human nature or family values or something and at the end we find out it's not over after all. 15 sequels later you start getting cross-overs.

Basically what makes one horror movie better than another as far as I'm concerned is just special effects, creative design for the monster or killer/ways of murdering a person, good acting, and the skilled use of suspense and camera angels, because God knows there hasn't been an innovation in horror movie plots since ummm ever. Which makes me wonder why they don't at least try and focus on the dialogue a little bit these days if nothing else. What I'm getting at is, though I hate remakes for exploiting an established franchise to make money for a product that isn't going to be as good as it promises it will be, I also think they may as well give it a try since technology is getting better and that's really all they ever had going for them anyway.

is this the remake of child's play you where talking about?

No, they're remaking the first movie.

at least i am pleased to know that Brad Dourif will be in it

I honestly thought that Child's Play was more of a joke than a horror movie. If you're going to remake it, at least make it scary.

Seems kind of soon though doesn't it? The original cast is still alive, and it's not like it was shot in black and white or anything. Plus, the movie is about a doll, and it was made with puppets, they don't really need CG to improve it, I don't see the point in remaking it, unless they totally rewrite the script, which seems pointless.

they could make it scarier, remember that lots of people are afraid of dolls. creepy looking things

Well, filmaking has somewhat changed since the 80's, outside of CG. I see your point. I assume they're remaking all this other stuff to establish a true mythology behing the killers. Because if you look back, the Friday the 13th and Halloween series got way too crazy and confusing. With Chucky, you can't really re-establish anything. He's just the soul of a serial killer in a doll.

they could go into more detail about the voodoo thing i guess.
