If it's crap... We'll tell you

Not sure if I'm too late. I've been buried in schoolwork, so I didn't have much time to work on my District 9 review much. So here's something else you may enjoy.

Repo: The Genetic Opera

Last Night, my sister moved in to her college dorm. Before this, I bought her Repo: The Genetic Opera, as she, for some reason, is a huge Saw fan, and she isn't gonna have that many movies in her dorm. She asked me to watch it with her as a going-away thing. I had bad thoughts for the movie, seeing it was made by the guy who does the Saw Movies. Not to mention it had Paris Hilton in it too...God I hate her so much! I thought this was going to be a really shitty film. After the movie, I promised to give movies more a chance. Repo was an awesome film, however, I don't think my sister had the same feelings for it. Strangely enough, I kept the movie! XD

The film has multiple storylines, all revolving around a big company known as Geneco, which specializes in organ transplants. We are told such an operation is the new plastic surgery, being this takes place in 2057. The company president, Rotti Largo is dying, and his two children are competing to take over the family business. In another plot, a girl named Shilo is diagnosed with a rare blood disease, and her surgeon father starts to become a little too overprotective about it. Shilo's father also works as a Repo man for Geneco. Repos reclaim organs from people who skip out on their payments to Geneco. However, Shilo's father is having second thoughts about his career, now that his next target is an organ from his late wife's friend and Shilo's godmother. I'm not going to say anymore, because how these plots intertwine with eachother is the most exciting part of the film.

I loved a lot of things about this film. It was out there and different from most movies, which is actually a good refresher in this day and age, where all the movies we have are pretty much remakes. Not only that, but when you hear the very first note of that music, it's almost like the song never ends. When these talented people aren't singing with such grace and experience, there are incredible instrumentals to fill the void. At first, it took a little getting used to, seeing that I work for a company that does musicals, where it's song-talk-song-talk-etc. However, when the plot of the film picks up, there's no need for the music to stop. You don't WANT it to stop. Also, the sheer energy these singers and dancers put into their songs is just amazing! Think Moulin Rouge, but five times as intense.

I didn't really know much about these actors in the film, but that doesn't mean they aren't talented. I was so suprised how well the entire cast was at singing. Yes...I have to say it. Paris Hilton is actually a really good singer... -_- The edits from her latest album sound like some sort of machine, but you can easily tell this is actually her singing. Not only that, her acting was pretty good too. Now if only she would have kept that talent for her other movies (coughcoughHouseofWaxcough). The movie's co-writer, Terrance Zdunich, plays the role of a grave robber and drug dealer, and I thought he was going to simply be a cameo, but he play a much bigger role than I expected. Not only that, he has the catchiest number from the movie. Bousman has created a cast from every background. Opera singers, rock stars, child actors, horror stars, old school actors and actresses, and....whatever Paris Hilton does, but it works out flawlessly. The songs range from rock to ballad to opera, so the job description of these actors fits well.

The only real problem I had with this movie was the aspect of horror Bousman was trying to give it. That NEVER works in Opera! There is plenty of gore and killing, enough to give this movie an R rating, but they try too hard to make it scary and suspensful. It shouldn't be, since most of the violence in this film is actually pretty funny. The closest thing I can compare this movie to is "The Phantom of the Opera," but even that doesn't help it. I don't even know what genre this movie fits in to. Is it Horror? Is it Sci-Fi? Is it Drama?

Even so, this was an awesome movie! I can't tell you much about it, since the film itself is made for YOUR experience. If you want to enjoy this film, remove all expectations you get from the not-well-known actors, it being made from the same guys as Saw, or simply the fact that it's an opera. That way, it will truly blow you away once you truly see it.

I am posting a link to this article describes whyBreaking Dawn, the last installment in the series, should be made into a film. Let me say this: I HATE Twilight and find it to be one of the most annoying phenomenons in recent popular culture. But ...
