What movies have you guys seen that you went in not expecting much, but walked out completely wowed? For me, the big one would have to be District 9. I went in expecting just another sci-fi actioner...and instead got one of the strongest, most compelling political allegories in years. What say you?

Drive. Went expecting meh crime thriller got epicness.

In Bruges had a cool poster and 3 Harry Potter stars, and there was nothing else to tell me that this would be the greatest fucking film ever no question shut your filthy mouth ever.

Same

Inception. I thought it was going to be good, but Holy Fucking Shit.

Xmen First Class. I was expecting it to be an Xmen Origins: Wolverine, but nope. It was great.

Oh plenty, most notably...

Happiness- I was on imdb and looked up Philip Seymour Hoffman's filmography. Orded it on Netflix and on thanksgiving day I watched it. Floored me. In my top 3, I can't stop talking about it.

Oldboy- saw a clip of it in a YouTube video, got interested and picked it up. Loved it.

Election (Johnnie To's)- for half a second on remote viewing Peter Hall mentioned it. Seeing as how he is my favorite of the bunch I watched it that night. Probably my third favorite foreign crime film behind Gomorrah and A Prophet.

Crimes and Misdemeanors- I was on a Woody Allen movie spree that week and I dvr'd this. Its the most affecting morality tale I have seen. A man absent of conscience and guilt can get away with anything....

Amores Perros- I was going to see Biutiful in a few days and I wanted to catch up on Innaritu films. For 155 minutes I was glued, at the time I thought I had seen a perfect movie. Still love it today.

Talk To Her- channel surfing and found this. Outstanding.

Fargo- my mom said it was fantastic and I really needed to watch it. Made me a Coen Brothers geek.

Drive- saw a poster for it in theaters, thought nothing of it. Month later I heard Refn was the director, I rushed out to see it on the spot.

Drive is the big one for me. I saw a commercial for this and thought, "Oh here's some dumping ground crime movie". Boy was I wrong.

Happiness.

The Doom Generation.

Calvaire.

Shock Treatment.

The Dark Knight and The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, I thought they were going to be good but I had no idea it was going to be great in a jaw dropping way.

I became more appreciative of comic books and the movies that was based upon and a huge fan of Tolkien after that.

The Prestige
Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story
Batman Begins

Shotgun Stories - I went in with absolutely no expectations. By the credits I was so impressed.

The Grey

The odds were completely against that movie. January releases tend to suck, the director didn't exactly seem like Coppola material, and those CG wolves threw me off. However, the movie itself was brilliant.
