This guy right here, Night of the Hunter. This movie is awesome and somewhat ahead of it's time. It has Robert Mitchum as a false preacher, using his stature as a preacher to wed unsuspecting women and murder them and take their money. It's really great, and it may be Mitchum single greatest preformance. Also, the director of this movie never directed again, nor did the screenwriter ever right another script. They both started and ended on this movie.
Because of how underrated it was during it's time, and how unknown it is outside of movie nerds today. If it wasn't for the internet, I would have never heard about this film, and I still haven't seen it talked about anywhere outside of the internet and film school.
Not underrated in it's era, was it? I thought it was widely recognized as a great film.
Maybe it's fallen out of favour because of the religious themes...? I don't know about the "movie nerds" but my mom's always been a big Shelley Winters fan, so this was one of those movies I was exposed to time and again as a kid. I shouldn't admit it, but I always cheered for Robert Mitchum just a little.

I got to watch this in my Media Arts class in school. And if you are wondering why this is called Elephant its because it comes from the expression "the elephant in the room". Of course this movie is very sad.
