Certainly one of the most underrated movies is Infernal Affairs. Everybody watches and loves the Departed and gives it all the credit even though it's a remake, a mere shell. I'm sure there were some improvements made, but what it really comes down to is that your average American movie goer can't be bothered to read subtitles. Well, I saw Infernal Affairs years ago and it's definitely one of my all time favorites.

I refer back to The Battleship Potemkin.
While a LOT of Hollywood people have seen it, and ripped it off to an extent, almost NO ONE outside of Hollywood (except true movie fans) have seen it, let alone heard of it.
On the top of my head, Perfume the Story of a murderer. Movie like Children of Men and Dark City are films that are overlooked because of the science-fiction movies.
Any movie that Terry Gilliam Has made, has been underrated such as twelve monkeys, brazel, and time bandits.
i saw the perfume in high school in my french class (that's because we read the book before) and i wasn't really impressed. i agree that making a movie centered on odors is really hard and the finish product is good. but yeah, i wasn't blown away.
As a true lover of the world of cinematography,
I find that the way a film looks can often make up for many flaws.
And one of the best directors, still living,
that utilizes the power of his camera so beautifully
is Wes Anderson.
