Odd. I don't see anything that SANCTIONS the use of the word "FAGS".
I do however see then SANCTIONING the Term "Fight Against Grenade Spam". Seriously man, is it possible that you (and other people being "offended") are just being another example of ASSOLE? (Another Super Sensitive On-Line Entity)
Honestly, let's be logical about this one for just one second. The programmers were well aware of a practice that was DETESTED inside the game. That practice was the random tossing of a grenade at a LOCATION and not at a target or for the purpose of eliminating an "Enemy". This practice is detested by players because it's a cheap-tactic that holds nothing more than throwing a 'nade at a spot in the HOPES that someone will be in that known "Spot". In order to (humorously) try to stop players from doing this known practice, Infinity Ward came up with the "PSA Ad" to hopefully cut BACK on this practice. Even going so far as to give it a "Catchphrase" to use so people will know what it means (Fight Against Grenade Spam). While the ACRONYM might spell an unfortunate word, the fact is that Infinity Ward was NOT intentionally being offensive to anyone, and were NOT attempting to discriminate or drive away anyone from their product. They were solely attempting (Failed obviously) to prevent an unfavored practice in their game.
But, instead of taking what Infinity Ward DID do and say in their "PSA Ad", you've got people that are OVER-REACTING and trying to claim what they were INTENDING to say. Why is that? Is it because the word "FAGS" could be used, or was it because they were PURPOSEFULLY LOOKING for something to attack? I'm sorry, but on this one, I side with Infinity Ward because I KNOW that people WANT to find something to bitch about all the time.
If you don't believe that, then I remind you of the "Controversy" a few years ago when people wanted us to STOP using the phrase "Master and Slave" when talking about linked systems. That the "Master System" and the "Slave System" was offensive because it implied a "Slavery mentality" in people that had linked systems.
This is just another example of "Over-sensitivity" getting out of hand. Proof? Well, let's say that instead of using "Fight Against Grenade Spam", they decided to use the words "Fight Against Random Throws". Because we all know that no one likes it when a "FART" is in the room.
If it was FART instead of FAGS, guess what? I would approve of it since FART isn't a derogatory term for a minority group. It would be like talking about the "National Independent Group Gaining Extremely Readable Sensibilities".
Have you even read the tweets given by Robert Bowling? He admitted full heatedly that the "F.A.G.S" joke was intended, albeit as a more simple pun: "I think it was more of a social commentary joke of that stereotype than it was a fist-bump of acceptance to it." Later, he pulled the ad saying, "I agree. I think the core gag is great, the end is a bit too far from the intent of the joke & can appreciate the concerns. Pulled."
Frankly, I don't give a shit what the PSA was advertising, MDS. Yeah, grenade spamming is annoying, however, a minor annoyance in a video game shouldn't justify the usage of the word "fag". They could have easily called it, "Fighting Really Annoying Grenades Spamming (F.R.A.G.S.)" and it would have worked, but Infinity Ward crossed the line with the joke.

Honestly, no I haven't read the "tweets" by Robert Bowling. And furthermore, why WOULD I want to read the "tweets"? "Tweets" aren't official publications from a COMPANY, but from an individual INSIDE that company. Would you expect the "Tweets" of Korey regarding a single joke to indicate the BUSINESS PRACTICES of Spill.com? Would you also accept a "Tweet" from "Scott" who works at Microsoft as Microsoft's BUSINESS POLICY?
Okay, look. The people involved with deciding to use Fight Against Grenade Spam were WRONG to use that particular acronym, but that doesn't mean the Company (Infinity Ward) as a WHOLE are promoting the use of the acronym as a derogatory means of confronting people's lifestyles OUTSIDE of the game they made.
And that's where my bone of contention is. Instead of people saying that the people who MADE the ad were not "thinking responsibly", it's "Infinity Ward is anti-homosexual, and Infinity Ward is homophobic". Where is the "outrage" regarding the people that WROTE the script for the video, or the people that "Filmed" it? Or the outrage regarding the whole production team sitting by and letting it go on? Why is all the blame being pointed at the COMPANY and not the single individuals responsible FOR making the video?
I also think that the COMPANY pulling the ad after concerns were expressed shows that they ARE acting accordingly, and have issued an APOLOGY for it already. Yet, no one seems to CARE that they've gone "Wow, yeah. We did screw up on that one, we are sorry and didn't mean to be offensive to anyone." No one wants to give them a slight "okay, next time you'll know better". No one wants to say "Hey, maybe you should do something a bit more socially aware by donating to a cause.".
No, the ONLY response I've heard so far has been to burn Infinity Ward to the ground, burn all the copies of the game that "promotes homophobic concepts", and while we are at it let's kick the makers out of the industry forever.
Seriously, it's a FUCK UP. Someone just wasn't thinking, it's gotten blown out of proportion, and I think that it's simply people being overly-sensitive looking FOR something to be "offended by" that have continued to go after soft targets (Company's public image) to get people to "repent" so the "Offended people" can claim a "Victory" when it happens. Some dude screwed up on this one, that simple. His fuck-up got pointed out, and he said "Yeah, my fault". Why should we continue to be upset or even talking about it? What's worse, the whole "Flak" that resulted from this ad happened AFTER it was pulled by the company.
Well, MDS, do you know what Robert Bowling's position at Infinity Ward is? He's the creative strategist for Infinity Ward, so guessing by his title, he would have had his hands on the PSA at some point, so it's actually relevant. There's a difference. Spill.com doesn't advertise with vulgarity upfront. If you watch ANY of the Spill video reviews, many of them are heavily censored (especially when concerning strong language) in order to avoid offending a large majority. Korey also has a responsibility to the people who own Spill.com, so if he offends the wrong people, he's going to get a talking to by the guys in charge.
It doesn't matter if it was just one person who made the PSA or the whole company, Infinity Ward's name is on that advertisement for their product. The PSA is representing the game, which is then in turn representing the company that made the game. They need to be careful or else they'll encounter problems like this. I don't think Infinity Ward is homophobic nor do I think that was the intent of the video. They screwed up by not making sure that their recent advertisement wouldn't offend anyone, and it did.
It doesn't matter what their intent was, by releasing an ad like that, they have openly invited the floodgates of criticism and controversy. At the end of the day, no matter who made the video, it still has the Infinity Ward logo. They needed to have thought that crap through before releasing it to the public. Now they know, and hopefully, this sad page of video game advertising history won't be repeated again.
Pulling the ad was the right thing to do, however, they should not get a pat on the head for doing so. This isn't a six year old picking up the pieces of a glass vase he accidentally sent crashing to the floor, this is a company that has a responsibility to it's audience and shareholders to appropriately, and successfully, advertise and sell their product without causing such negative controversy. If they were a small developing company for an independent game, maybe I could forgive the PSA (most likely not), but this is not their first outing in the video game world, nor is it their first outing in terms of advertising their products, nor is the game being marketed to a small audience. They sure as hell should have known better.
Burn infinity Ward to the ground? Where have you heard that? I don't want to see that happen, in fact, as idiotic of a move as Infinity Ward did with the PSA, I'm still looking forward to playing the game.
You're right, it is a FUCK UP, and somebody wasn't thinking. But guess what? It's not out of proportions because it's, once again, utilizing a derogatory term for a minority group in an attempt to help sell the game. Should we forgive Infinity Ward and trust in them that this will never happen again? Yeah, but that doesn't mean we should forget this incident, especially when it has happened so recently. Instead, this issue should be on the forefront of video game advertisements for the industry as a whole; this should make every video game company take a second look at their ads and just think, "Will we get in trouble for this?"
When i watch that clip i cant help but think of south park doing an episode bout that subject last Wednesday.
That just shows how awesome louis ck is, did that like 2 years ago but south park prolly still think they are new and edgy, HAH.
I have a pre-order on MW2, but I definitely wouldn't call it the best game ever made. Its just another really addictive fps on halos level (but in my opinion better). I think the best game ever made would have to actually bring vgames further into an artistic medium and have people stand up and notice it as such. MW2 just does the same thing slightly better. I would say Bioshock or Mass effect are up there as the best,
I have to give them their due for bringing the fight home for once. I mean in every army game america is like super and invades just about every country out there. Are you kidding me? thank you infinity ward for bringing virtual violence to the US. I'll bet any amount of money that soccer moms and bullshit politicians everywhere will be up in arms about the game depicting America actual getting its ass kicked.
