Ditto. My favorite two books are Captain America and Green Lantern. Both Final Crisis and Brand New Day were crap. The Death of Batman and WWH were incredibly overrated. Blackest Night and the Death of Captain America were awesome. Marvel has Brubaker, DC has Johns. Each company has its moments of greatness and it's moments of crapness.
Alright, perhaps I need to explain.
Marvel is currently in Dark Reign, a new status quo that got tiring after the first two months. And since Marvel's so continuity-driven, every fucking book is under it's shadow.
DC is currently being led by Blackest Night, which is unsuprisingly good. Even the tie-ins are don't suck.
Marvel is continuity driven? Did you read Final Crisis? The whole thing was based off the New Gods, which weren't even popular when Kirby created them. How the hell is the casual reader supposed to know who the New Gods are? And How many times did Orion die? Didn't they kill Batman twice in the space of a month? Agreed, Dark reign has way too many tie-ins,but don't use continuity as your main argument. DC's continuity is far more fucked than Marvel's, and that's saying something, especially because Brand New Day screwed everything up. Did Final crisis solve anything for anyone besides killing Martian Manhunter, Batman (again) and Darkseid who we all thought was dead anyway? Marvel's main drive isn't continuity,it's money, that's why you have 1000 tie-ins. On the other hand, DC does all its crossovers because its desperately trying to right 60+ years of mishmashed continuity every single time it does a huge event. Didio must want to kill himself.
I didn't explain myself well enough, sorry. I thought both Final Crisis and Secret Invasion sucked. I couldn't finish Final Crisis because, well, I had just started reading comics, and it was practically incomprehensible. I'm just happy that DC didn't have a brand new onslaught right after Final Crisis. They let things cool down. Marvel, on the other hand, just kept on rolling.
Most DC fans have been fairly exposed to the New Gods. Batman only died once. Orion did die like 3 times... fucking Countdown. I agree DC has a bit more confusing continuity but it isn't really the main drive behind most stories including Final Crisis which was pretty much Morrisons take on old concepts and didn't serve to shake up continuity at all.
Marvel always has a certain direction in mind and pushes its line that way towards the next event which will in turn set up their new direction. If you like the direction it can be cool but if you don't it can be a pain to have your favorite books pulled into the fray. DC has for a while let its books stay their own course with the glaring exception of Justice League of America which is just all kinds of a train wreck.
They are however starting to have more continuity between titles. For instance there is New Krypton for the Superman books and Batman Reborn for the Bat titles. Also Blackest Night is having its fair share of tie-ins. There just isn't a line wide direction like Marvel has... yet.
He died twice- Morrison killed him in Batman:RIP via helicopter and Darkseid killed him in Final Crisis....though you are lead to believe he is alive sometime in the past.
As for Orion, that's just all times of messed up.
RE: RandyFlagg. I completely forgot about Secret Invasion. I enjoyed it more than Civil War, but thats because I read the few books it actually had consequences in- Dark Avengers and Iron Man.
