Why do people put up with Martin Scorsese's racism? In every film he's ever made he displays racist characters that put down every race but italian. Why? Why aren't more people up in arms about this?
Here is some links to spark the fire. They don't really answer the question but they prove that I'm not the only one who feels this way.
Um I did read the posts, and no you did not. You briefly mentioned him in one post after someone responded to u with "Like Spike Lee" so no a discussion is more than a statement. You never addressed what's the difference between Spike Lee and Scorsese. And I never said Eastwood is a racist, I said Lee basically accused him of being racist, Read posts more clearly before you comment on them. Why is this post about a man who never addresses race in any of his interviews and the only racist things attached to him are CHARACTERS that are HORRIBLE GANGSTERS THAT KILL PEOPLE who use racial slurs because they DO HORRIBLE THINGS (Scorsese) instead of man who uses race and racial issues for his own benefit and seems to have a lot race issues himself (Spike Lee)???
I want people to admit, aknowlege, or on some level understand, that when you look at scorsese's overall body of work, from Raging Bull to the Departed, you can understand why some people get offended.
You may not agree that he's racist but you can understand why others do.
40 years of Scorsese indirectly call'n me the "n" word is really start'n to work my last nerve. Raging Bull is the movie I saw recently the was the straw that broke the camel back. Enough is enough already!
Ah, NOW we get to the issue. You just saw Raging Bull and are upset about it. Well, I can honestly say I do not blame you for BEING UPSET after watching that movie. Let's be honest about it, Raging Bull is NOT a movie you watch and get all happy feelings about afterward.
But, let's keep a few things in mind PLEASE:
1) It's a biopic about Jake LaMotta, who was known to be racist, and personal demons eating at him during his career before and after boxing.
2) Took place during the 60's and 1940's where rampant racism was everywhere in America.
3) To make matter worse, he looses a fight to Sugar Ray Robinson (A black boxer) so that makes it harder for LaMotta to handle personally and professionally.
4) Was dealing with known mobsters, who were themselves racist.
5) Was known to be abusive both physically and mentally to women, as well as other family members.
6) Scorsese only did the movie because DeNiro was pushing for him to make it. Scorsese himself didn't understand the "sport" of boxing.
7) Both DeNiro and Scorsese worked on the screenplay but were uncredited due to the way the Writer's Guild was set up with payments and screen credits.
8) DeNiro was more responsible for casting than Scorsese, pushing for both Pesci and Moriarty (His wife)
Please understand, that Raging Bull isn't going to make you dream of sweet puppies playing in a field with a ball. It hits you in the gut because it is so real in it's presentation of characters and events (as filmed) that you HAVE to react. Personally, I can see why would be disturbed by the movie as a viewer. Even if you hate or love the movie, you have to admit that it IS brutal in the reaction it causes in YOU (the viewer).
But, that doesn't justify attempting to claim Scorsese is a racist.
What justifies my claim is that he has been chooseing to do movies about racist characters for 40 years. The fact that he makes compeling and interesting movies just means that he's not an idiot.
You don't have to be a toothless hillbillie to be a racist.
This comment is going to be my last one on this topic.
Sol aka "Cap'n Hates-A-Lot", you are either ignorant of what racism and racist means..
Or, you are clearly out to get a reaction out of someone, and I took the bait.
I didn't take the bait because of WHO you are accusing of being a racist, but because you are accusing someone of an offensive and destructive characteristic that is one step down from being a child-molester. And, you accused the person that has shown no record of being a racist, or promoting racism, in his personal life.
No I'm sorry, they can't. I need your definition of a racist please because you're being an idiot about this whole thing.
How has Scorsese indirectly been calling you a the "n" word? I typed the word "nigger" in my post, I am not black and you probably read it. If you did does that mean I am indirectly guilty? If the word its self offends you I apologize but it was not intended to offend so I don't see what good is served by either being offended or complaining about it.
Also, we are talking about an Italian and IRISH (racism is quite prevalent in Ireland) gangster movie here, they are gonna be racist. As for Jake LaMotta, its a very tough subject, it would have been a terrible and pointless film if they portrayed that man as anything other than what they did.
What the fuck is wrong with you people? They are fucking films about bastard gangsters!!!!!!
Have you ever met a gangster?
They're pricks!!!!
. . .and are in Gangs!!!!
. . .Criminal Gangs!!!!!!
. . .And Criminal Gangs are often segregated due to race!!!! Why in the blue fucking balls of Christ almighty would they not use racial slurs when referring to one another?!!!!!
Is martin Scorsese suppose to omit this so people aren't offended? That's idiotic censorship from the easily offended.
P.S.
The use of racial slurs is, not only, not always intended to offend but are also not always use by some who is themselves racist (a racist being someone who oppresses or judges another person due solely to their race). You want to piss someone who is black off, call them a nigger (That's a direct shot at the "sicilians are niggers" thing) because that's really gonna get to them. They got cancer? Call 'em baldy.
to be honest the type of people that his films are about would probably be a bit racist or at least have fear/aggression towards other groups, if the people in Scorsese were all hippy like, preaching tolerance it would seem fake, also most of the characters in his films are not meant to be liked, do you really think travis is meant to be a hero and respected, no and most of the people in Scorsese's film are not meant to be good people most of the time.
Did anyone read the article on racialicious??? the writer of the blog hasn't seen the movie, the commenters respectfully disagree and point out all of the vulgarity in the movie and how it created the atmosphere. The website its self seems to "find" racism everywhere. Shit, by that matter I can call spill racist because the background is black and the font is white. this is a silly arguement.
