Obsidian Entertainment has been hit with layoffs according to the company's forums. Obsidian employee, animator Andre Nguyen, confirmed the rumors in a tweet sympathizing with "fellow Obsidianites who were laid off today." Layoffs affected the company around this time last year.

Obsidian Entertainment was previously responsible for Fallout: New Vegas. Only a few months ago it was announced they would be taking on a South Park RPG. Joystiq is reporting a "future next-gen project" has been canceled and the layoffs affected that team. The South Park team was also impacted by the layoffs. Joystiq's tipster even had some insight on the amount of people let go, "Approximately 20-30 people from all disciplines, including one person who started yesterday, as well as one who started last week."

A fucking shame. One of my favourite developers.

Their track record has been very mediocre. The Agency, KOTOR 2, Dungeon Siege 3, and New Vegas had enormous technical problems when they were first launched. Not to mention KOTOR 2 had large unfinished sections/plot holes, also the fact that most of the products on their resume have been sequels to much popular games (the only original title they did was the Agency).

With the new South Park game, it's chances of financial/critical success is slim.

Granted, it is unfortunate to see this. The only hope I can see for the future of this company, is if some bought them out or migrated 100% of the workers to another company (Bethesda, CD Projeckt, or Bioware perhaps). As I said, sucks to see this happen to the employee's, but some high official at Obsidian should've seen this coming.

Oh, their games have technical problems? So does every Bethesda turd out on the market. Only difference is that Obsidian actually put some effort into their games.

KOTOR 2 was rushed out by Lucasarts. They even refused to release a content patch after Obsidian petitioned for one.

Also, it is Alpha Protocol, not The Agency.

Oh you mean such turds as Elder Scolls Morrowind, Daggerfall, Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout 3, and the upcoming ATROCIOUS Dishonored? Oh god are they fucking awful! Just complete trainwrecks, I mean aside from influencing western RPG's and receiving countless and deserved rewards - they are just awful because I say so and that is the LAW!

The reason why Obsidian can put such easy effort into their games is because they didn't have to start from scratch like Bethesda or Bioware (hence why most videogame sequels are better than the original). With the exception being Alpha Protocol (I know, I apologize) and look how that turned out (in fact I think Asylum's releasing a straight-to-DVD movie based on it). However Alpha Protocol was just the first of it's series, if it were to have a sequel I probably wouldn't have as much negative things to say about the studio.

Despite Lucasarts rushing out KOTOR 2, that still does not make the game any better. In fact, it proves that even under stress - Obsidian is on par with other companies that rush out videogames based on movie properties.

Indeed. Bad gameplay, bad RPG mechanics and bad writing. Why are they so praised again?

But Bethesda didnt have to start from scratch since Oblivion (sorry if I am wrong, did not play Morrowind), and their games still are not as deep as Obsidians.

The reason it has not received a sequel is because of sales, and sales =/= quality. Did you play it?

Despite Lucasarts rushing out KOTOR 2, that still does not make the game any better.

What kind of sentence is that?

In fact, it proves that even under stress - Obsidian is on par with other companies that rush out videogames based on movie properties.

No, it proves that Lucasarts are cunts. Imagine if you were given 90 minutes to write an essay, but were then forced to hand it out after 60 minutes because the teacher wanted to go on vacation. The resulting essay would not fully reflect your intentions and knowledge.

If Obsidian got bought out by Bioware, I'd probably just kill myself.

What about a CD Projekt/Obsidian merger?

Yeah, but considering the oodles of cash that EA has and the current state of gaming, which do you think is more likely?

You say that as if it's a bad thing. I'll get the noose!

A developer that actually lives up to it's reputation of having excellent writing being bought up by a company that stopped giving a shit about writing quality years ago in favor of hamfisted romances, forced homosexuality controversies, and EPIC FOR THE WIN STORYLINES...

Yeah, that seems like a bad thing to me.

Disclaimer, I'm using this as an example of the piss poor writing and dialog. Not the gay sex.

EDIT: Forgot my Helpler

Okay, what you're bringing up is subjective (such as most of my other comments). I actually dug the writing in most of Bioware's games, sure there are some bad spots, but nothing to truly get upset about personally. With Dragon Age 2, while I do feel that the writing was somewhat weak in that area, it was nice to see a videogame that gave the player that option (something you don't see in a lot of other games, because the developers don't want to take the risk).

And I don't even like Dragon Age 2 all that much! So those are my thoughts.

Yeah, I'm indifferent to this. While obsidian does have decent writing and ideas in their games, I haven't liked any of them. At all. KOTOR 2 was the most playable but after that all of their games have been completely unplayable garbage in my opinion. Having a decent track record in the writing department is absolutely worthless if you are piss poor at developing game mechanics or putting together an engaging interactive narrative structure.

I hate how Obsidian is being idolized these days simply because they haven't sold their souls to the big two. There are plenty of smaller dev to latch on to that are great writers who have great ideas that actually put together a playable experience. Stop overlooking the fact that obsidian is a pretty shitty developer as a whole.
