Hey fellow Spillios, I've been thinking, I have my opinions and the spill crew has theirs, but when or can opinions be wrong? I bring this thought up because I know many people who prefer certain films or videogames I can't stand. For example 2001 is considered by many to be a landmark film that is timeless and remarkable. I watched the movie all the way through and really did not like it, regardless of the admittedly amazing special effects. Now am I wrong to dislike the movie for what I thought it failed to do or do well what critics, professors, and many other respected individuals call a genius movie?

Another case, Casablanca is loved by many people especially film critics and movie buffs. I watched the movie all the way through and thought it was decent, I was surprised it did not blow me away like it did so many movie buffs and critics. It is a good romance movie in my opinion, but not a mind-blowing, remarkable story told with the finest actors that will ever live. Bogart and Bergman are very good actors, I cannot deny their talent, but I'm still confused as to why the film is considered one of the best of all time.

My point is, if I love movies like Aliens and the Thing(1982), games like Dead Rising and Gears of War, are my opinions on these movies/games valid when movies/games I'm not crazy about are beloved by critics, movie buffs, and gamers and have legendary status? Is it childish and/or foolish to not love the "classics" film critics and movie buffs gush over?

Are you upset or confused that your opinion differs from others? That's all I gathered from your post, really.

It's hard to answer your question on a technical level. There are such things as professional opinions, that are respected by many. But in essence, I think you're asking about personal opinions. A personal opinion, is just a personal opinion; neither right, nor wrong. Just an opinion. We aren't dealing with straight truths, such as facts. From what you posted, you just don't seem to like mainstream things, is all.

It is not about the opinion so much as it is the analysis, when you talk to people on this site about certain films; and how you have a different opinion, you should be able to give a proper reason.

For instance, if you say something, “Family Guy is so funny because all the funny things they say and do.”  That is not a sound analysis, and many people won’t take your opinion seriously.  It is always about why you feel this way about the topic, and sometimes there aren’t words to describe how you feel, but so long as you give us something to dissect and take away from your argument, then your opinion is correct; although many may not agree.

Some may even feel passionate about the film that they will challenge you to the death about, but that is okay so long as you always deliver a sound argument. And only a few people here will resort to low blows, but that is normal.  Just don’t say anything so vague that it makes no sense, and makes you look stupid, an opinion is wrong when there is no opinion; just mindless chatter.
