MAK2.0 (The Hybrid) added a page to the group Planet Tyro - Anime & Manga EnthusiastsI reading an issue of Vanity Fair and they had a huge section about television is better than the movies, which kind of made sense but I had to wonder why...
Everybody keeps saying that Television is much better than the movies, and I just wonder why? I know comedies are much funnier on the small screen than it has been on big screen for the most part (thanks to shows like Community). I wanted to ask this questions and get everyone views on it because I know there are a lot of fans of Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, and The Walking Dead and I just want to know what could Hollywood do to improve their content in the film department?

I absolutely hate canned laughter because they use it for shit that isn't even funny. Honestly, I'd rather educational shows like Modern Marvels over the prime time shit out there now.
Permalink Reply by MDS on June 29, 2012 at 4:38am Simply put..... Depends.
If you are telling a short contained story, then the Movie format is best.
However, if you are telling longer (or more detailed) stories, then clearly TV is the best format.
Good example of what I mean? Well, look at the movie Goodfellas. It's a short-concise story that only needs roughly 2hrs to tell. There is no need to extend the story or characters beyond the story told. Movie-format is the "better" choice.
However, something like Game of Thrones, with it's multiple character arcs, interconnections of characters/events, and the vast changing of settings (North of the Wall/King's Landing etc, etc) is best suited for the longer TV format. Even though, if you really think about the running time per season, the Game of Thrones TV-show is really nothing more than just 3-4 movies per season.
So again, the answer is simply: Depends.
Depends on what you are doing, Depends on how you want to develop your characters, Depends on if you have a "short" or "long" story.... it just really Depends.
Permalink Reply by George Asterson on June 29, 2012 at 12:19pm I don't think I'm alone when I say this show by it self is better than almost 99.99% of movies out there. And this is only one show. "The Walking Dead," "Game of Thrones," and "Boardwalk Empire" are also amazing and they too beat out most movies. I love film, but if were talking about quality entertainment, then T.V wins. More time to develop characters and get inside the minds of them.
