I reading an issue of Vanity Fair and they had a huge section about television is better than the movies, which kind of made sense but I had to wonder why...

Everybody keeps saying that Television is much better than the movies, and I just wonder why? I know comedies are much funnier on the small screen than it has been on big screen for the most part (thanks to shows like Community). I wanted to ask this questions and get everyone views on it because I know there are a lot of fans of Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, and The Walking Dead and I just want to know what could Hollywood do to improve their content in the film department?

I find that comedy works better on TV shows. I think that's because comedy works better when writers draw their humor from the characters, and TV shows have more time to develop characters and draw out more jokes than a 2-hour movie.

However, I find that drama works better in movies, and that might be because of the techniques that filmmakers use. Maybe I'm just watching the wrong shows, but drama on shows like 24 or Law and Order just seem pretty bland and boring to me.

I think you're watching the wrong shows.  Breaking Bad is an incredible TV drama.  Law and Order at least is very episodic and procedural.

Law and Order is bland and boring for anyone who doesn't like formulaic police dramas. In it's defence 24 is occasionally very funny because of how ridiculous it is.

Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, Deadwood, Rome are all better than 99% of movies out there.

In tv shows you have more time to meet the characters and more time to build a story. I feel more attached to tv shows then to movies.

I think that TV is better then American movies as a whole. But foreign films are on pair with TV so far. Then again different genre of films work better then TV and TV better then film. Comedy's for me work better on the Big scene because when comedy is on TV jokes can last for seasons and there are low points high points. With Film big jokes and faster pace then it is done. With drama that is better on TV because the characters have more time to plat out and the issues can be look at more, with movies they have s short time to get the whole story and character building in hours then seasons like Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones.

id say that there is absolutley no point to this argument, they are both just mediums that deliver content to you, its like asking if its better to eat lunch out of a plate or a bowl.

I prefer TV it has more time to develop it's story and characters

It's very dependent on what the creative minds are trying to do with their work.  TV, at least, the shows that are receiving rave reviews right now, are very much long form and in depth.  Not every story is long form by its nature, and therefore drawing comparisons between the two is unfair.  It's also important to note that these conclusions are being drawn based on what's happening right now.  Right now, TV networks are willing to take risks on new and inventive shows; something they weren't willing to do in the past.  They've seen success with those shows and are now more willing to green light great stuff that they may not have taken risks on before.  Hollywood, on the other hand, is being much more cautious with what they're willing to invest in right now, and are only looking for things that they can market easily, which is why we're seeing such a huge upswing in remakes and licensed properties.  These things will change with time.

I think TV shows are better than the movies because TV shows are half hour show.

But movies are time consuming other than the TV shows.

I would say yes had it not been for the overload of reality tv show.

No. Maybe it is because I don't have the cable channels you have to pay more for that I can't give my thoughts on Hbo and Shotime. But Movie have always beat t.v.

I agree with you television shows  are  better than movies. In  Movies story never change. But in TV shows Every day a new  Story begin. My favorite TV show is SpongeBob SquarePants. This show is my all time favorite Tv show. Click here to Watch SpongeBob SquarePants Online free without any cost!!
