Inernational movie delays - are they relevent?
This has been a bit of a peeve of mine for many years, those of you who live in the U.S. will have rarely experianced it, but countries in Europe must deal with it all the time.
I am talking about multi-releases for movies, where a feature is released at a later date in other territories outside of America. For example, Disney/Pixar do it ALL the time, the worst of which was a six month gap until we saw it here in Ireland.
What are your thoughts on this topic, what have been your worst experiances with it, and, is it even relevent these days? I know in many occasions it is due to subtitle-generating and passing movie censoring boards, but is it a means to generate a higher overall international gross?
Edit: - This also applies to Blu Ray and DVD releases, do you think that Blu Rays should become region free, so that they can be internationally released on the same day?

It wasn't bothering me a few years back, but since I've started to hang around a lot of Internet movie blogs and websites, it's become a huge pain in the ass.
Thankfully, I don't watch a whole lot of movies in theaters (maybe 4-5 a year), otherwise I don't think you'd ever hear me shut up about it. Still, last years I there were three movies that I was seriously pumped up about that had a 2-4 month delay between the release in the USA and the release over here in Sweden. Some of them were even considered "okay to spoil" before they were even close to release here.
I suppose I can sort of see the reason for this, distributors may not want to gamble on smaller releases before they know how they're doing overseas, or until they gain interest from the public due to Oscar nominations. But it still feels as if someone isn't putting enough of an effort in, why was there a four month delay for Black Swan? Even before the Oscars that movie should not have been hard to sell...
Pixar movies I always assumed were being delayed because they need to be dubbed (my sympathies are with people in countries where all movies need to be dubbed :-/), but thinking about it, both Rango and Kung Fu Panda 2 came out here at the same time as they did in the US, and both those movies were released dubbed as well as in English.
Like I said, I'm assuming there's a good reason for it, but that doesn't make it any less annoying >,/p>

Man, I realy sympathise with you, being in Sweden, you must have it worse than we do here in Ireland. I think it all comes down to the amount of time there is between completion of the film, and it's theatrical release. Pixar movies generally have very little time, so the dubbing and subtitles for other languages means that worldwide releases are delayed, sometimes considerably.
In the other hand, films like Rango may have had more time ti work on the dubbing so ensure an international release. There's so many complexities and reasons here, that it would be nigh-on impossible to determine if it is a problem with the studios, or distributers. Spoilers are a major problem, and I think sites need to be more careful and considerate with the material they publish, especially in these days when anyone can post a blog with a review.

Really? Wow, that's aweful. I was in the strange prediciment for Up, where I could have bought the region-free Blu Ray from America, BEFORE the film was even available in cinemas over here.

I always have a 1 year lag with Pixar films. Dubs can go to hell.

It's regional. You guys get The Wind that Shakes the Barley and Perreir's Bounty, which get released straight to DVD here.
I'm a big fan of Irish film.
But a lot of the time there are great foreign films that get released 3 months before they get to the USA. MicMacs and The Good, The Bad, The Weird are good examples of that.
