I have always felt that independent films were an elite part of the film world. Yes it's where some people get their start but now it seems to be more commercialized. They have big name actors associated with indie films, which as a consequence could bring in a bigger budget. Isn't the whole premise of an indie film that there is next to no budget, unknown actors, and a story that might not appeal to the masses? Once an indie film makes it big does it lose that initial quirky charm it had? Those are my questions. Discuss!! ;)

Indie film is NOT dead. festivals like Fantastic Fest are proof of that and so is the box office smash Paranormal Activity which ONLY cost 11Gs and made what... 70 mil? Indie films are far from dead...
Independent films are often awesome. But (most of the time) I can't stand big-budget "indie" movies with hand-drawn titles, hip soundtracks, and awkward weirdos with hearts of gold. I guess what I mean is that I'm not into movies that try too hard to seem quirky or offbeat when they're really not.
exactly. when it's effortlessly offbeat and genuinely quirky, that's when i can watch the film over and over again without getting sick of it. when they force the indie feel i can only watch the film when i'm in a certain mood
I try to think of indie films in the same way I would think of any other film. I just want it to be good. And I don't think they're a dying breed as there are so many of them being made all the time.

I don't think the big studios care about independent films as long as they're not making money. Everybody has a price, even the independent film makers.

I think that that the whole "Indie Film" genre is a misconception to begin with. Being "Independant" doesn't mean anything other than "Can't afford".
"Can't afford" the top-star names to draw attention. "Can't afford" to have the big-film crews to check sound, lighting, effects, script. "Can't afford" to market this film to a wider audience. "Can't afford" to do multiple takes to get the best one. "Can't afford" to go to remote locations and shoot a film in settings other than the "neighborhood".
I'm not saying that "Indie Films" are bad movies (although a lot of them are), I'm just saying that everyone involved in the whole "Indie Film" genre would jump at a chance to be involved in a big-budget "Studio film". "Where the Wild Things Are" by Spike Jonze ring a bell? A bunch of videos and he's suddenly the "Darling" of the "Indie film genre".... yet, they tossed a few million his way and he completely got out of the "Indie film genre" and made a big budget movie for WB. Just like almost everyone else that has been involved in "Indie Films" has.
Kevin Smith, Kurt Wimmer, Bryan Singer ... just to name a few of the "Indie Film" guys that are now being paid Big-budgets to direct a movie. The WHOLE purpose of the "Indie film genre" is to get your foot in the door. The genre isn't dying, until people decide they don't want to make movies ever again.
okay to start i'm already a fan of Repo! The Genetic Opera. it's my second favorite movie right after Ginger Snaps. So i already know that Repo Men is Bullsh*t to me, a pure Rip off of an original and stunning film (even thought the concept is borro…
