The Gambler of Fate. posted a statusWhich recent games do you think hold the most influence over how games are made, and what they're like today?
For me, Grand Theft Auto and World of Warcraft come to mind, although I'm not that big of a gamer at all, so I'm betting you guys will be much more educated on the subject than me. Anyway, discuss!

Mass Effect, Gears of War, Uncharted, and Call of Duty
Prior:
Halo
Permalink Reply by Cthulhu R'lyeh on April 24, 2012 at 4:08pm Mass Effect - No
The only thing it did was popularise the dialogue circle, which is a piss poor innovation.
Gears of War - Yes
Though not the first game to utilise a cover system, I think it is obvious why there are so many cover based shooters out there
Uncharted - No
Just a collection of popular gameplay mechanics done poorly
Call of Duty - Yes
"We want the Call of Duty audience"
Halo - Never played it
Permalink Reply by LunaticLMD on April 24, 2012 at 5:23pm Oh this guy right here. What games do you like? Bashing Uncharted and God of War 2/3.
Mass Effect - Dialogue wheel? Little things like that make a difference. I like it.
Gears of War - Cover system? Eh, I like Rainbow Six Vegas and Deus Ex's better..I was thinking Horde mode. I don't agree, because survival modes existed before, but it made it really popular I guess. And Season passes also.
Uncharted - Motion capture. You hear a lot more about it now after Uncharted.
Call of Duty - lol what? Audience? They introduced perks and killstreaks.
Halo - Allowed you to carry two guns.
Just examples, there are probably more.
Permalink Reply by Cthulhu R'lyeh on April 24, 2012 at 5:30pm Mass Effect - They don't
Uncharted - You are thinking of L.A. Noire. You see, motion capture was a part of that game's gameplay, since you had to be able to read people's faces. It doesn't matter in Uncharted.
Call of Duty - I am on your side, jackass.
I like a lot of games.
Permalink Reply by LunaticLMD on April 25, 2012 at 12:30am It doesn't matter in Uncharted?
Say what?
Uncharted gets a lot of praise for the animations in the game. Makes the characters move, act, react a lot more realistically for immersion. Especially back in Uncharted 1. I think it popularized mo-cap a lot more.
Permalink Reply by Talvi on April 25, 2012 at 6:01am The Fifa games are alot more knows for innovating the animations with motion capture well before Uncharted. Or any big sportsgame for that matter.
Permalink Reply by Cthulhu R'lyeh on April 25, 2012 at 8:58am Yeah, it didn't work the way it was supposed to, but it was a part of the gameplay.
Permalink Reply by George Knight on April 24, 2012 at 7:55pm Implying that the dialog wheel is a good thing.
Implying that Mass Effect invented choosing your characters dialog.
EDIT:
Halo - Allowed you to carry two guns.
Fuck you. At first I found your Mass Effect comment mildly annoying, but not I want you to die in fire.
Permalink Reply by Jon, Gallifrey's Mindfreak on April 24, 2012 at 8:07pm The thing is that Halo was extremely influential, just not in any way that was good.
Permalink Reply by George Knight on April 24, 2012 at 8:58pm I'm not saying it wasn't.
The two gun thing is what makes me mad.
Not only is it completely and utterly wrong, but he's referring to the dumbing down of the genre like it's a positive thing.
Permalink Reply by Jon, Gallifrey's Mindfreak on April 24, 2012 at 10:23pm How is the ability to use two guns at once a 'dumbing down' of the game?
Permalink Reply by George Knight on April 25, 2012 at 12:56am Because pre-Halo, you could hold like a dozen guns at a time in FPS games.
