In Honor of Veterans Day..What are the BEST WAR Movies ever made?

To be reverant, Veterans Day began as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day to commemorate the signing of the armistice between Germany and the Allied forces ending World War I on the western front. In light of this, I've limited My List to movies that take place during World War I and those battles afterward. Being "Veterans Day" an American Observation the list could include any conflict where US Soldiers fought for our country. But to honor the brave men & women EVERYWHERE who fought against tyranny and for freedom, (and to include the MANY Spill members around the world) feel free to include war films about (& from) other nations.
And to honor the dead, (& to someday stop the strife among men) PLEASE feel free to
include your lists of the BEST ANTI-WAR Movies ever.

We Were Soldiers.

i feel like a broken record mentioning this movie over and over again when the topic of war movies is brought up. the reason why i think this movie is up there at the top is because unlike most other vietnam movies; it doesn't highlight vietnam vets as fucked up killers, the movie was fairly neutral to both sides and wasn't politicaly influenced. it wasn't right-wing like green berets and it wasn't anti-war liberal like many others. don't get me wrong i LOVE apocalypse now, but we were soldiers is helluva an accurate portrayal, my dad fought in vietnam, and we were soldiers was the only movie to move him to tears.

and kudos for mentioning many overlooked great ww2 movies.

Hey, Witten, I agree, that's why I listed "We Were Soldiers". It's refreshing to see a fairly unbiased war movie,
(especially about Vietnam!), to see (then) Lt. Col. Moore (Mel Gibson) respect his enemy enough to review his combat tactics and to think like him, also the Sgt. Maj. Plumley (Sam Elliott) steals the show!

Thanks for sharing, Witten. God bless your dad.

nice job mentioning To Hell and Back. interesting to see audi murphy (most decorated US soldier ever)starred in the movie as himself.

Hey, Witten, I KNOW! It's weird how long after WWII (ten years!) Audie Murphy starred as himself in "To Hell and Back". I guess he really tried to downplay his heroics and tried to shine more light on his fellow soldiers heroism.

Tigerland

Hey, Waterwizard, thanks for replying. You know I have NOT seen Schumacher's Vietnam film (with Colin Farrell's American debut). That good, huh?

It is good. It is within the context of Vietnam, but the main attraction is a perspective. The perspective is yeah I know you needed a job, or you wanted to be a hero, or whatever else motivated you to join the service (during Vietnam). Now lets see if we can get you out before you go over there and get yourself killed in Vietnam. The war is trying to get out of the military if you made a decision to join and maybe shouldn't have. Tigerland is a unique little film that won't get much attention. Kind of Catch-22ish. Very controversial when looked at closely.

So yeah.

War film. :)

Hey, PvtSnafu, (LOVE that name!) , thanks for sharing your list! Yours was more complete, yours predate my list of films (WWI onward). Great selections, lol..speaking of Custer have you seen Dustin Hoffman's "Little Big Man"? I thought I was the ONLY person who LOVES Spielberg's "1941" (every one I know hates it).
Haha.. Marx Brothers! Have you seen "I'll Never Heil Again" The Three Stooges leaders of Moronica?
thanks again.

V for Vendetta. (It was a movie about a war on terrorism, told from the otherside. right?)

Hey, Berko, to be quite honest, dude, I never know when you are being serious, or pulling my leg.
But, hey I guess that's true! I mean isn't that what the BIG Army calls the little army, guerilla fighters / terrorists?

Hey Gojira Boy,

Since I mentioned some of my favorite war movies, I want to know your opinions on a couple of movies you have on your list that I have problems with:

Flags of our Fathers: Compared to Letters from Iwo Jima, I found this movie dull. I didn't like the performances. I found the ending went on a little too long. I didn't find the story of the three guys traveling the country after the war engaging. I honestly do not like this film.

Rescue Dawn: Overall, I liked it, but I have a huge problem with a scene in this movie. After Steve Zahn's character dies, we see him walking up to Christain Bale, out of nowhere, talks to him for a little bit, and then he disappears. And, he does it again. And, after that, Christain Bale gets rescued. When I watched that, I went, "What the fuck is that all about?" If you have an answer to that, I want to know, because I felt that scene does not belong in this movie.

Thanks
